Iconic Subaru Rumble Sound

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, i have a 2006 subaru legacy gt 2.0l. i am looking to make it sound like a wrx, wrx sti. my friend has a ej25 turboed subaru outback as has gotten the mufflers removed at the back. his car now sounds identical to a wrx and im looking to do the same. i just got the same procedure done to mine and now it sounds like a honda civic on crack haha. im still looking to get that iconic subaru rumble that the wrx, and wrx stis make. im thinking about getting a new exhaust system made for my car, turboback, 2.5 inch with 1 resonator and 1 muffler, or 2 mufflers at the back behind my exhaust tips. im not trying to make my car too loud, as it can become illegal from where i live.

if anyone has any positive ideas or suggestions. it would be much appreciated. no negative comments please:).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's an equal length manifold for the twin scroll which would explain the uber mower/civic sound.

You can't really run the UEL with a twin scroll because it will mess up the turbo dynamics.

I don't think you can really get the "classic" subaru rumble with this car unless you replace the header, up-pipe, turbo, downpipe with a single scroll system.

thanks heaps to everyone for their positive replies, im just wondering, has anyone done any exhaust change to their legacy gt that makes it sound similar to a wrx?. im planning to take mine to get a downpipe 2.5inch and at the split, more 2.5 inch pipe into a hiflow muffler on each exhaust.

all the 2.5 turbo legacies can sound like a wrx, just change the exhaust. there really isn't anything to do because they are the same setups fundamentally. And don't forget that the within the wrx family there is also a wide range of different sounds, the wrx's with the single exhaust and the newer ones with the dual exhaust sound different. Plus the new wrx's have dit twin turbos as well, so those sound different.

But like we all said the rumble comes from having unequal length headers, so without that you will NEVER get the rumble. You also have a twin turbo setup I assume? The 2.0 lgts are twin turbo so they require equal length to get linear flow between the two turbos. So technically you can't get the rumble! Unless there is some kit out there thats bolt on and can make a twin turbo work properly with uel then your out of luck. And the likely hood of such is kit is highly unlikely because it makes no sense.

If you are talking about your 2.0L Legacy GT, you can play with all the exhaust options you want downstream of the turbo and you won't get the WRX "rumble" because you have equal length headers matched to a twin scroll turbo.

That rumble comes from unequal length headers. The exhaust pulses are not synchronized and that leads to the rumble. The only way you can get that rumble is to replace your header/manifold, up-pipe, turbo, and downpipe with a set that is unequal length and a single scroll turbo.

Sorry, I know that's probably not what you want to hear; but that's the mechanics of how it works.

Many people on here would love to have the TS setup. Offer to trade your entire system from manifolds, UP, and turbo and I'm sure you'll get some takers to give you an UEL manifold, UP, and turbo in trade, providing, of course, that all your's is in solid shape and all their's is in solid shape.

hello everyone, just an update on my car, it now has a rumble. I'm really pleased with it. I cut away the exhaust at the split where it goes out to 2 exhausts, and replaced the pipes with 2 1/4 inch pipe, I have added 1 resonator to each side and it now sounds beautiful. thanks to everyone's replies. but I think making the stock exhaust pipe larger is probably the way to go in order to get the loud frequency rumble
