My Take on the 05 Legacy tail light mod.

Recommended Posts

So, i will start by saying i barely have ever posted any thing in my life anywhere so please bare with me. Ide just like to share the tail light mod i did today with you all :)

Also im not responsible for any thing you break! Always mod only if you feel comfortable doing so.

What did i use?

* 2x led switchback bulbs bought on ebay

Here:https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F311264566085

(If you dont like these bulbs, any 12v switchback with 4 wires will do)

* 8mm socket to remove tail light housing

*Wire stripping tool

*12 gauge speaker wire or any wire the same gauge as stock.

*A bunch of wire tappers

*Epoxy

*Dremel or something to grind with

(It may also help to inform you i have an LED Flasher relay from Diode Dynamics for my LED front and back compatibility. It has tons of features the 05 legacy didn't come with like keeping the turn signal lights on for 20 seconds when you lock and unlock your car for example)

What did i do?

Well I, like many others dont like the standard brake light setup, and i hate how the turn signals are up top and red and the JDMs get fancy tails?! I say thats a bunch of garbage so i decided to take my own approach on the tails and turns. Also since im poor and cannot buy JDMs something had to happen. So here we go this is a sum up of what i did.

.....well i cannot upload pictures..... So here are links i guess , im sorry!

This first picture is of the bulb i used because i had two laying around already.

Second picture is me in the testing phase. I removed the reverse bulb and tapped the wires to the bulb. Black wire with red stripe is positive (hot) wire. On my bulb one side is negitive , and the opposing kitty corner side is positive.

First thing i did while testing was put the car in reverse (while off!!!!! And parking break on) to make sure i get the white smd to light up and not the amber. In other words wired backwards. If you find the amber is on when testing, swap the positive wire lead from the reverse harness to the bulb wire directly next to the amber wire.

Little different angle shot here, the next wire you will need to quick connect and run is what im calling the turn signal "signal" wire. Its the white one on the harness, it needs to be run to the bulb directly next to where you put the negitive wire from the reverse harness.

Next before you move on, test turn signal operation for switching. If reverse is off, white should never come on.

Okay so this next photo isnt very clear im sorry. But you will need to dremel or sand the reverse bulb hole large enough to snugly hold the switchback, and because im super lazy is put a couole dabs of epoxy on the sides of the bulb once it was in all the way and siliconed around it to prevent moisture, if it happend to go bad it would easily break free but not under normal driving. Last things i did was solder the wires up to the bulb and then sealed them up. And the last wire you need to run for the top to be a brake light is from the harness side of the top lights white wire to the bottom light harness white/black stripe wire. Seal it all up, test before you bolt it back on or you could be taking it all back apart.

And the results
