louiebay
I'm gathering all information I can before I take on the HG job on my 2.5i. As I research I find threads with good info then i see a person posting all Auto Manuals under one site . All the following info comes from there. Not sure which procedure to use. "http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/ " it says "Free Japan Cars Factory Service Manuals" This has all the manuals from 1999 to 2013 and I looked into my 2007 year under USDM 2007. Looks like the sequence is the same BUT the numerical values are different. They are on par with the 2010 on up years but slightly different under USDM Legacy FSM 2007 (BP-BL) » 2007 » 4 ENGINE 3 SECTION » MECHANICAL MEH6DO For cylinder head installation it shows a different sequence B: INSTALLATION 1) Install the cylinder head and gaskets on cylinder block. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch the mating surface of cylinder head and cylinder block. NOTE: Use a new cylinder head gasket. 2) Tighten the cylinder head bolts. (1) Apply a coat of engine oil to washers and cylinder head bolt threads. (2) Install the cylinder head to cylinder block, and then tighten the bolts with torque of 20 N·m (2.0 kgf-m, 14 ft-lb) in numerical sequence as shown in the figure. (3) Tighten the bolts with torque of 50 N·m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb) in numerical sequence as shown in the figure. (4) Loosen all the bolts by 180° in reverse order of installation, and loosen again by 180°. (5) Tighten the bolts with torque of 20 N·m (2.0 kgf-m, 14 ft-lb) in numerical sequence as shown in the figure. (6) Tighten the bolts (1) — (4) with torque of 48 N·m (4.9 kgf-m, 35.4 ft-lb) in numerical sequence. (7) Tighten the bolts (5) — (8) with torque of 44 N·m (4.5 kgf-m, 33 ft-lb) in numerical sequence. (8) Tighten all bolts 90° in the numerical order as shown in the figure. (9) Tighten the bolt (1) — (4) by 45° in the numerical order. but then on the same site under 2007 Subaru MECHANICAL(H4SO) Use new cylinder head gaskets. 2. Tighten the cylinder head bolts. (1) Apply a thin coat of engine oil to washer and bolt thread. (2) Tighten all bolts to 29 N·m (3.0 kgf-m, 22 ft-lb) in alphabetical order. Then tighten all bolts to 69 N·m (7.0 kgf-m, 51 ft-lb) in alphabetical sequence. (3) Loosen all the bolts by 180° in reverse order of installation, and loosen again by 180°. (4) Tighten all bolts to 42 N·m (4.3 kgf-m, 31 ft-lb) in alphabetical sequence. (5) Tighten all bolts by 80 to 90° in alphabetical order. (6) Tighten all bolts by 40 to 45° in alphabetical order. CAUTION: The bolt tightening angle must not exceed 45°. (7) Tighten bolts (a) and (b) further by 40 — 45°. CAUTION: Make sure the total re-tightening angle of the step (6) and (7) does not exceed 90°. Now yet another: USDM Legacy FSM 2007 (BP-BL) » 2007 » 3 ENGINE 2 SECTION » MECHANICAL MEH4DOTC B: INSTALLATION 1) Install the cylinder head to the cylinder block. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch the mating surface of cylinder head and cylinder block. NOTE: Use a new cylinder head gasket. (1) Clean the bolt threads and the bolt holes in the cylinder block. CAUTION: To avoid erroneous tightening of the bolts, clean out the bolt holes sufficiently by blowing with compressed air to eliminate engine coolant etc. (2) Apply a sufficient coat of engine oil to the washer and bolt thread. (3) Tighten all bolts to 40 N·m (4.1 kgf-m, 29.5 ft-lb) in alphabetical order. (4) Retighten all bolts to 95 N·m (9.7 kgf-m, 70.1 ft-lb) in alphabetical order. CAUTION: If the bolt makes stick-slip sound during tightening, repeat the procedure from step (1). In this case, the cylinder head gasket can be reused. (5) Loosen all the bolts by 180° in the reverse order of installing, and loosen them further by 180°. (6) Tighten all bolts to 10 N·m (1.0 kgf-m, 7.4 ftlb) in alphabetical order. (7) Retighten all bolts to 30 N·m (3.1 kgf-m, 22.1 ft-lb) in alphabetical order. (8) Retighten all bolts to 70 N·m (7.1 kgf-m, 51.6 ft-lb) in alphabetical order. (9) Retighten all bolts by 80 — 90° in alphabetical order. (10) Retighten all bolts by 40 — 45° in alphabetical order. CAUTION: The tightening angle of the bolt should not exceed 45°.(11) Retighten bolts (A) and (B) by 40 — 45°. CAUTION: Make sure the total “tightening angle” of steps (10) and (11) does not exceed 90°. I might just close my eyes and then eenie miney moe it

SubOperator
You are looking at 3 different engines. For non-turbo 4 cylinder engine you need you second quote: 2007 Subaru MECHANICAL(H4SO) (4 cyl Single Overhead cams) MEH6DO is for EZ30 6 cylinder non-turbo ( 6 cyl Dual Overhead cams) 4DOTC is for turbo EJ255 (i.e. GT and XT) (4 cyl Dual overhead cams) Happy motoring. Do use angle attachment for your wrench and do use some oil when putting head bolts in. Also, there is another link to FSM (Factory Service Manuals) somewhere on this site. Search for "vacation pics". \ 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 249K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 272K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K

SubOperator
No problems. HG job is not that hard if you have right tools and patience. I do not recall if 2007 has VVT already, if it does then FSM calls for special tool to put the rocker arms back. It is not needed actually, just be patient tightening cam bolts one by one letting rocker arms to lower itself properly. I did that on 2010 2.5i and all worked. Also, Youtube is your friend. When putting injectors back in, do lube the new seals and push them in fuel rail *slowly*, twisting them side to side just a little. Do not ram them in. Otherwise they will rip and leak fuel under pressure when you crank the engine first time (ask me how I know, huh). Good luck. 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 249K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 272K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K
louiebay
Yes 2007 has the VVT, Subaru calls it AVLS. Looks like I gotta buy the gaskets for them when I get the heads off and take them to the machine shop. I know my way in and out of small block Chevys and 70's and 80's cars, I actually installed this Subaru engine in my garage but never taken one apart for HG repairs. So I'm reading up and researching what it entails. Your pointers are a great help.
apexi
Briansmobile1 has some good Subaru vids. his tightening sequence vid. it's older, there might be a newer vid. though, I guess it doesn't really matter how old the vid is. This guy also has a few videos that might be helpful. His videos are posted on some other guys channel, I find his vids by searching "Subaru mike" on youtube. moral hazard
https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/psa-subaru-changed-headbolts-improved-2010-onwards-271129.html I recently found some revised/upgraded Subaru *black* head bolt part numbers for SOHC and DOHC along with a revised procedure for both. See my thread above. Hope it helps.
