Are turbos supposed to look like this?

Yea..... I know they aren't.....

So here's what Ive had going on with this wagon gt...

I acquired this mess for a steal thinking I'd wind up with a car I've always loved that had a unique twist. The beginning of a JDM build. The owner had swapped a dual avcs jdm EJ20Y where a single AVCS ej25 should have been. No ecu modification besides disabling the TVC. They plugged the holes but didn't cut the divider out. I'll get to doing that eventually, but that's honestly the least of my worries at this point.

So now you know kinda where I'm at, here's what I've been through.

When I got it it was running like poo. Get it home and start doing my research and find an jdm ecu dump, get the software and hardware to write and modify my ecu, change the timing maps to match the jdm ecu and it immediately ran better. Still not quite right tho. So I begin disassembling the top of the motor to find that the inlet pipe is cracked and no good. My turbo is only being supported by the exhaust and oil and water lines. Found a silicon replacement inlet made custom aluminum brackets to secure the turbo , put it on and ensured all fittings were on correctly, and tightened down enough but not too much, you know, took the kind of assembly time a shop wouldn't do.......

Still on the jdm edit.... Take it down the road and notice bad detonation during a particular rpm and suspected engine load. Get it home, flash the 2.5 factory rom and take it back out and the detonation is gone. Get back home and modify the maps to half the increase of timing as it was. Reflash, take it back out and it definitely drives better but not as good as I would think it should. The turbo is no longer creating boost like it should.... When I get out of the car this time, I see white smoke, so I optimistically hope the turbo has blown and not the engine...

Better this than a ringland issue....

So now I've attempted to catch you up on this messed up ride and you've made it this far I'm hoping you have some awesome experience to share with me that'll get me back up and running.... I'm about to rebuild a turbo for the first time.

Here's some pictures and explanations

Here's the turbo exhaust side. Does the exhaust side normally have this much pitting? Its a vf38 twin scroll btw

Here's a metal object I dislodged from....

And you know what the expeller looks like... First pic up there.

I'm sure something metal passed through the turbo and messed it up, what it is, I can't tell.

I'm going to order a built center piece and hope that fixes my issues, but I'd love some criticism here... The most cost effective way to get this sorted out.

Should skip a stock replacement core and get the housings machined for a vf36 or 37 core and wheels. Will give you a heap more punch while still matching the current TMIC and exhaust.

The real question is how many metal particles got into the engine due to the turbo failure?

It’s common for people to replace a turbo after a failure like this only to have to replace the shortblock 500 miles later because the bearings are shot because all the debris got in the oil and destroyed them.
