taylormac1993
All my lights are out. Headlights, foglights, running lights, dash lights, you name it. The parking lights on top of the steering column work, as do the hazards, turn signals, and high beams (only momentary switch works. Pushing the switch forward does nothing). Brake lights also work. This happened when I was trying to troubleshoot a headlight issue and bridged a wire in place of one of the HL relays. I figured it was a fuse but all fuses are good, including the stupid big ones. Checked most of the applicable relays by switching them with AC relays (same part) and nothing makes a difference. I am down to jiggling the switch around to see if that works but nothing happens no matter what I do. The car does run thankfully, and I havent noticed it throw any new CELs, not that I could check them anyway
Brighton96
Maybe illumination unit? It's just a box attached to the panel under the steering wheel
taylormac1993
You happen to have a pic? I was at a junkyard tearing some apart today and didnt see anything like that.
Brighton96
I don't have a picture but here's an ebay listing, the "illumi con unit" is missing from this kick panel but it is normally mounted to the right of where the other things are mounted, where there is a single mounting hole. I used to have a spare illumi unit but I guess I lost it :/ This is what the unit looks like http://ebay.am-autoteile.de/ImageGallery/images/665a350a-971b-4402-bbf8-a38933664250/large.jpeg And here is the listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-99-SUBARU-LEGACY-OUTBACK-UNDER-STEERING-COLUMN-LOWER-DASH-KICK-PANEL-/291856176081?fits=Year%3A1998%7CMake%3ASubaru%7CModel%3ALegacy&hash=item43f3fbd3d1:g:hzEAAOSwV0RXv4gK&vxp=mtr
taylormac1993
I found mine. Is there a way to test these? The two bgs at the junkyard here didnt have these.
Brighton96
I mean, I'm sure there is a way to get a multimeter and check if it works but you'd have to find the pin diagram for it. I would just plug the new one into the car and see if works.
taylormac1993
Thats the problem, I didnt find one. I only have the stock one
taylormac1993
Im about to go get every one I can find from a scrap yard today. We will see if it fixes it but I still have a weird wiring issue I believe. More updates to come.
taylormac1993
I got three modules from a scrap yard and none of them make a difference. Could it be the switch?
Brighton96
Oh I was sure that was it :/ And I mean it COULD be the switch but I really doubt it, Do the wipers and windshield sprayers work? If they still work then I'd say it's not the switch.
doublechaz
Was there any sparking when you were bridging that relay?
taylormac1993
I didnt see any sparks. Its possible it shorted the switch though. I figured it would blow the fuse but I have no idea what happened. Wipers and everything work I just have no headlights or running lights. Im about to swap a different ecm over and see if that has any effect on it. I have a spare laying around so why not right? If that fails I will have to see if its this switch... that involves taking the damn steering wheel off. :/
taylormac1993
And as expected it didnt change a damn thing. I guess im pulling the wheel.
Brighton96
I mean, pulling the wheel isn't too bad. The hardest part is just breaking the wheel loose of the spined shaft. Just hammer fist it a few times, pretty painless.
doublechaz
Can't you get to the connector for the switch without pulling the wheel? Then you can check for continuity on the pins per the FSM. I know I checked my ignition switch that way once. Just pull a couple trim bits.
Brighton96
If you remove the plastic around the steering column you can get access to the switch and you may be able to disconnect it to test it.
taylormac1993
It turned out to be the headlight switch. A few hours and $16 later I got a used one installed and it's back to normal.
doublechaz
Today sounds to have been very successful for forum members. That's good news.
taylormac1993
By back to normal I mean Im still having bad issues with wiring but at least now I can troubleshoot it. My low beams are very dim using both fillaments and my high beams are actually my low beams. Ive quadruple checked both sides and I have it wired right. Any ideas on that? Das Ninjabot
That sounds like it could be a bad ground issue.
Brighton96
+1 for bad/loose grounds
taylormac1993
Thats what everyone says but my ground wires to the headlight pigtail show zero resistance. I should check the grounds to the relays and the illumination control module too. Any other ideas on what to check?
Brighton96
Id check the grounds under the dash/on the trans tunnel and then I would also check the grounds on either frame rail under the hood.
doublechaz
You could also do some involved testing of ohms through the relays when they are energized. That would involve disconnecting some stuff, so I'd leave that until you've exhausted other tests.
