Joshua Kilen
I have a 1998 Legacy L wagon with the EJ22E engine and the 5 speed manual, and i need to know if it has hydraulic valve lifters or if it has the solid lifters. If it has solid lifters what is the valve clearance be? I did some quick researching and after 1997 it changed to solid lifters, this is the site where i found the info, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine#EJ22
Brighton96
Pull the valve cover off and look at the rocker arm assemblies, if its mechanical lifters I'd highly suggest converting it to HLAs. I swapped mine out for HLAs shortly after I got the car because it's much less headache than trying to set lifter tolerances. That swap would just require finding a donor car to pull the rocker assemblies off of, it would only take about 30 minutes to swap the assemblies. And just to clear things up, when I say mechanical, I mean solid lifters. If the rocker assembly looks like this then is got HLAs http://i1317.photobucket.com/albums/t637/96Brighton/2014-03-10_13-20-53_633_zpsudk3jl8n.jpg And if the rocker assembly looks like this then you have mechanical lifters http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z314/987687/IMG_3506.jpg
Brighton96
If you have mechanical lifters it looks like the intake should be .0014-.0024 and exhaust should be .0016-.0026 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just going off of what the haynes manual says. Joshua Kilen
thanks, i am not that experienced when it comes to car engines, according to the FSM on this forum the intake is 0.0079 and the exhaust is 0.0098, see the picture for the screenshot
Brighton96
.0079/.0098 sound a lot more likely, the haynes manual didn't have them labeled very clearly. Setting the valve clearances isn't a tricky job, but it's part of the timing system so if you aren't confident then don't mess with it. Just convert to HLAs and call it a day! Joshua Kilen
i just had the timing belt replaced and i can't even find a full conversion kit? any links/sites would help.

There is no "conversion kit" so to speak, you would just have to go to a junkard or find a parts car and take the rocker arms off of it and then install them onto your car. It's only 8 bolts and that's it, no other adjustments or fiddling required. I'll look around to see if I can find a set online somewhere.

Osei
If you do a swap be very careful on install. The cam bolt torque specs are very light. O.
