2010 turbo shortblock swap

Recommended Posts

The oil pan on the 2010 has an extra bolt but the '05 will bolt up anyway. Need to look at the turbo oil return as well. Edited by fahr_side

Thanks. To clarify I assume I would use the 2005 oil pan? I will dig around for some pics to see what extra bolt you are talking about, but haven't had my coffee yet.

Do you see the turbo oil return as a problem, or just something that needs a custom line made?

2010-2012 uses a different motor mount system. There is a mount on the front (effectively the pitch stop) and no mounts on the engine itself, they are on the tranny bellhousing in the 5th Gen, so make sure the block has threaded holes for the traditional engine mount locations.

The original motor mount pads are still there on the later block and the 10~ front one just bolts on. I've seen a '10 block in an '06 WRX.

2010-2012 LGT motors mount to the body by the oil pan.

There are extra bolt holes (2) along the front edge of the pan mounting surface. These are 8mm holes whereas the rest of the EJ's are all 6mm holes. 4 of the 6mm holes have been enlarged to 8mm for a total of six 8mm mounting points that the rest of the EJ's don't have.

The actual block casting is slightly different. It has been reinforced to accept these larger mounting holes. While it may be possible to retap and add these 8mm points to an EJ257, the lack of reinforcement may cause the oil pan to separate and leak, or the case could crack under the stress.

Other than these changes to the oil pan mounting, the blocks are the same.
