NAV MicroSD card Bad

Recommended Posts

All, To give you a warning that it Can happen!!!

I took My SD Card out to back it up with Subaru tools (4.0). I started the software, it read the SD card (info was displayed) and I backed it up. After I finished, through windows I ejected it, and removed it from my computer. I put it into my car, and I got an error trying to read the SD card!!.. I put the SD card back into my computer, and now the computer says It needs to be formatted!!....

I took my car to the dealer, and they said that I have to pay $500+ to replace the card. I told them I did nothing wrong and I used the tools given to me etc. They will now call the regional manager to see if they can replace it under warranty!!... OY!!...

I am a computer guy, and I though I took every precaution to make sure I didn't screw it up.

Has anyone out there taken your SD card out and had this issue. Did anyone do anything special to remove the card / put into the car to not screw it up?

Thanks

I have taken it out and copied it to my backup hard drive and also made a backup with the Subaru software of it and didn't have any issues. I too am a IT Engineer / Systems Analyst.

I hope they make good. I've found software that recover the SD.. It was able to scan and find ~600 files.. But all of them want $$ to recover and that doesn't prove recovery will actually work.. Anyone know of software that is free to recover? Thanks all .. ANY help is appreciated..

Recuva is free

I use it all the time.

Thanks.. But that doesn't read a SD card that is not readable..

I've tried Magic Fat Recovery 2.1, but they want $$$.. it sees 600+ files, but I don't want to spend money unless it does work... who knows if it missed a file etc..

Thanks.

Copying won't work. I just tried to copy the files to an HD then to a different card. My car wouldn't recognize the new SD card.

I will try a sector by sector copy when I get home.

Did you make sure if there were any hidden files?

Yes I made sure to show hidden files. I think it's the name of the card. I formatted my spare card in fat32. Used the same card size. I couldn't rename the new card to the same. It had weird symbols. I will try to clone the card when I get home and see if that works.

The 'S' in "SD" stands for "Secure." DRM is present and enforced on the Subaru map data cards. That's why you can't just copy or clone them.

... I couldn't rename the new card to the same. It had weird symbols. ...

If it helps, this is the SD card volume name copied & pasted from my backup (originally copied from my original SD card):

â{âèâàü[âÇ

But I’m pretty certain a copy from a backup to a new SD card won’t work in the car, I tried this on a new same size, same format & same class SD card for our Foz SJ XT just to see if it would work, & it didn’t. From memory the card serial number or some other info in the card’s CID is the problem.

If you manage to get it working I would be very interested how you did it.

Even if not required I always use ‘safely remove hardware and eject media’ on all my windows PCs. I’m not saying that was the reason for corruption though.

Does anyone know how many files are on the SD card?.. just seeing if I would might miss some to help diagnose.

This won’t help much because it is for the HK system fitted to the Australian spec 2016 3.6R, but perhaps someone can do the same for the USDM SD card.

Obviously the .zip files contain quite a few files which could be why you are seeing ~600 files.

The following I obtained by running the following in a cmd prompt from my SD card backup on HDD D:

d:\â{âèâàü[âÇ>tree/a /f>tree.txt

Ignore ‘tree.txt’ which is the text file listing the folders & files as below.

D:\ â{âèâàü[âÇ # I have added D:\ â{âèâàü[âÇ , prior to this it displayed D:.

Mine has 3 gb used. Maybe it's saved favorites.

I won't be able to try cloning. I got to work at 6 this morning and was supposed to be done at 10p but I just got told because we are expecting lots of shots fired calls (ghetto) I'm stuck till 1am so I will be going to bed as soon as I get home.

Well I was able to recover the partition with what I think is all the data. I started the Subaru Toolbox up and clicked restore.. It was successful In restoring, but my Nav still doesn't work, no error, when I click maps, but it doesn't do anything weird.. I did put a blank SD card in, and put an image on it (to test if it can read it (change background image) and it was able to read the SD card).. NOw I just have to see if I can just get the files..

No, no other partitions. I have display hidden & system file options enabled.

I just took the original SD card out of the car & compared the SD card to the backup on the HDD & noticed there has been a new sub-folder created recently (2-Oct-16) under 'licence' called '.reg'. A new file had been written to 'licence' & a new file written to '.reg'. Oct-2016 was around the time I checked for updates on SubaruToolbox so I expect that was when that folder & files were created.

I'll update the list I recently posted shortly. Edit - now updated.

Nope, even tried old and new card and did a restore from Subaru Toolbox.. neither worked...

One test I did was that on the old and new card I create a folder called Image and put one file in there. I tried to change my screen off image and I was not able to select SD. With the other card I have I am able to.. so something is different about the card.. I just need a good copy of the files. Or it might be something to do with the newest firmware installed at the dealer might not be syncing to the SD card..

Oh well I guess I have to cross my fingers that they will replace the SD card under warranty. If not I will try the Ebay route and they are selling them for $50-$150 for the card. Better then $500.. With my luck they won't warranty it.. I will try the Ebay card and it won't work.. then will have to spend more money LOL and have Subaru fix it...

Well Happy New Year EVERYONE. Thanks for any help you can give me and your time!!!...

I'm guessing if a backup was successfully created with the Subaru utility it should recreate by restoring to a new card.
