The Grey Goose
This is a walk through with pictures of how to install auto dimming mirror with approach light and blind spot. This also applies to auto dimming mirror with approach light and NO blind spot. In order for this to work, you MUST have the auto dimming rear view mirror. That works as the master, and the side mirrors the slaves. Auto Dimming Mirror with Approach Light / Blind Spot: P/N: J201SAL102 Purchase: http://subaruonlineparts.com/subaru-legacy-auto-dimming-mirror-with-approach-light-blind-spot-p-3647.html Auto Dimming mirror with approach light: P/N: J201SAL002 Purchase: http://subaruonlineparts.com/subaru-legacy-auto-dimming-mirror-with-approach-light-p-3646.html There is a .PDF instruction form on the website, as well as attached below. This will mirror that, with tips learned along the way. From start to finish, this took me 40 minutes, and that was with taking pictures every two seconds. Someone could knock this out in 20 minutes easy. Tools required: 10mm wrench dash removal tool/flat head screwdriver needle nose pliers microfiber cloth flashlight Let's get to it! Here's what the kit includes: http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_144649_zpswrecexym.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_144756_zpsztjxxd0k.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_144803_zpsis5hu5si.jpg Step 1: Disconnect the battery. Both sides use a 10mm socket. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151158_zpsycjgyibi.jpg Step 2: Use the dash removal tool or flat head screwdriver to pry out the old mirror. Pry straight back (a decent bit of force is necessary). http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151300_zpsxqwuq71r.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151340_zpsegm9567a.jpg Step 3: Pull down on the mirror. The mirror will release completely. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151404_zpsp71visfb.jpg Step 4: Unplug the wires. I found it easiest to release the wires from the little holders. For the heated mirror elements, they were on there tight. BE CAREFUL with these. DON'T pull directly on the wire. I used needle nose pliers and gently got them off with patience. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151507_zpsmp6f6lhk.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151627_zpshnsqkkj3.jpg New mirror VS old mirror: http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151703_zpsourvsn5h.jpg Step 5: Locate the wiring harness. It was very difficult to find at first as it blends it very well. It's wrapped in this sticky foam, and stuck to the back of the housing. Don't worry, it's back there. The needle nose pliers also came in handy here. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_151802_zpst1sdrval.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152143_zpsisgfoexz.jpg Step 6: Unwrap the foam from the connectors. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152338_zpsh1wqh2yx.jpg Step 7: Remove the prearranged connectors. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152426_zpsonmg1orw.jpg Step 8: Apply grease into this random hole, or as Subaru calls it, the "outboard friction dampener". I found it was easiest to cut a corner of the grease off and squeeze it in there (just a little). Before: http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152554_zpsm3sftm6f.jpg After: http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152645_zps8sfc9ssx.jpg Step 9: Install friction dampener spring into the OUTBOARD mirror holder. I just used the old mirror as reference. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152731_zpsvfriam4q.jpg Step 10-13: Plug everything back in. Each connector is unique, so it's literally impossible to mess this up. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152846_zpsiave1xry.jpg Make sure to put the wires in their holders. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_152930_zpsqmp6gpqp.jpg The heater terminals aren't specific to which one goes where. Just reconnect them. The Grey Goose
Step 14: Hook mirror into place. The green part hooks up into it, then the red snaps into place. I found it was easier to push the whole mirror outward so you can see it easier. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_154226_zpshse3y07e.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_153028_zpse9kgdfcy.jpg http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_153033_zpsugghsip6.jpg Repeat everything the same exact way for the passenger side. Step 16: Reconnect the battery. I used a microfiber cloth to wipe off all the fingerprints on the mirror from the install. Then you can also re-position the mirrors. Now to test it! The instructions say to use something to block the light sensor on the rear, and turn the car on, but that did nothing for me. I ended up blocking the sensor and shining a flashlight into the front sensor. http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww76/ticonderoga16/20161014_154639_zpsxnkygpxl.jpg They're working! Congrats on the new mirrors! Edited October 14, 2016 by The Grey Goose

The Grey Goose
Awesome write up man! Thanks a lot! Thanks!! The write up took longer than doing the actual install. It was very easy and I highly recommend it if you're on the fence.

Timothy.B
Wondering if I could do this on mine. I've got the auto dimming rearview mirror. Don't think there'd be a harness though for it. I've got the heated mirrors as well. Timothy.B's 2011 LEGACY 3.6R

Don't think there'd be a harness though for it. I've got the heated mirrors as well. It'd be pretty easy to pop off your mirrors and check! Just make sure you really look to see if a harness is there because mine was hidden. Was it an option for your year?
xt2005bonbon
Do you guys know where the blind spot sensors are actually located (not the LED, the actual sensors)? Are they integrated in the mirrors or hidden somewhere on the sides of the car?

xt2005bonbon
I see. Just found this info as well: "Rear Cross Traffic Alert (warns of vehicles approaching when you're backing out of a parking spot). The Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) system uses two radar units, each mounted underneath the sheet metal immediately below the rear taillights. To help avoid damage, the radar units are purposely mounted above the typical bumper impact line." - Cars101.com All other information you'd want to know about the car that is available is on that page. xt2005bonbon
Also found this picture on cars101: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/outback/outback16-blind-spot-detection2.jpg Most likely the sensor is in that black box. Pretty large box. And this one: http://pictures.dealer.com/p/planetsubarusne/1186/1e52a013a439949ce0b79474cd945a7cx.jpg I put that in here for the part number reference. Kosko
Looking in my service manual, the radars appear to be in the lower corners of the rear bumper. My Legacy Premium is 2015Y. My side mirrors are without blindspot and dimming. I think that if I want to install blindspot detection I need to by also the sensors/radars that are under the rear bumper. But do you know are there the wires to connect them to the system? Have got any experience with blindspot?
