Quick Suspension Question

Recommended Posts

I would love to upgrade the suspension on my 2010 Legacy 3.6R because it is just shy of 140,000 miles. The sway bars make horrible noises and the ride is like riding on waves during a sea storm.

I would like to hear my fellow Legacy owner's comments or recommendation about the parts I would like to replace.

Front Sway Bars:

OEM 2014 Subaru Legacy 3.6R

Rear Sway Bars:

Whiteline 24mm adjustable

https://www.rallysportdirect.com/part/sway-bars/whi-bsr49xxz-whiteline-rear-sway-bar-24mm-adjustable

Shocks and Coils:

Bilstein GTWORX shocks with Functional Lowering Springs "BLACKS"

http://www.racecompengineering.com/index.php/subaru/2010-legacy-2-5gt-3-6r/suspension/gtworx-bilstein-legacy-gt-3-6r-fixed-perch-oem-fitment-sport-dampers.html

I choose this setup because I do not have the funds on spending a lot more money on adjustable coilovers.

Front and Rear Endlinks

I am a noob. Was wondering if endlinks would improve anything? Still do not know what brand to go with.

Bushings

I still do not know what to do about bushings whether to replace them with OEM components or something else? Would like to hear opinions about that.

I would like to replace the control arm bushings as well since everything is going to be apart.

Thank you in advance for the comments and feedback.

FRONT SWAY BAR: I have no idea if that is stiffer. Maybe someone else can chime in?

I like stiff sways, so I would go stiffer if it were me.

REAR SWAY BAR: Yes! Do that, or the 22mm. the 24mm might be too stiff to be paired with the oem front.

SHOCKS & COILS: That sounds like an awesome setup. Some folks on here really like the Koni Yellow Inserts, which they say are better. They are also cheaper but you have to assemble the fronts (or pay someone else to)

ENDLINKS: The consensus seems to be to keep the stocks until the fail, or go oem replacements (such as moog)

I have heard reports of the kartboy endlinks making noise as they age.

BUSHINGS: check this place out: http://www.aftermarketsuspensionparts.com/ they have some good deals. I haven't upgraded any of my bushings yet because I'm not sure I'd want the added NVH. Keep in mind that our cars share some bushings and suspension parts with other subarus. One example is that our rear lower control arms are the same as the brz.

TOWER BAR: I believe most folks on here claim that it makes no difference and is just bling. Others say they've felt a difference. I don't have one.

STEERING DAMPENER LOCKDOWN: Get it. It's on my list too; the reviews sound good.

On a side note: this is probably a good order for the upgrades except that I'd say do the rear sway first if you aren't doing them both at the same time.

Talk to perscitus, it's VERY close to his setup.

I upgraded to the 26mm front but the STI 21mm rear..BIG difference.

The dampener is supposedly incredible, I just bought it and will report.

The others I'm not going that route but anything struts and shocks wise on a 3.6R will fit an LGT so you can check them out ( the bars are not the same)

Yes, pretty much the only option. They went thicker in the 2013 legacy so this is an upgrade.

Rear Sway Bars:

Whiteline 24mm adjustable

https://www.rallysportdirect.com/part/sway-bars/whi-bsr49xxz-whiteline-rear-sway-bar-24mm-adjustable

That's what I have and I like it. There are a lot of options but that's the one I got and I'm very happy. The stock rear Sway bar is only 16mm of memory serves, 2013 went to a 19mm but 24 is good.

Shocks and Coils:

Bilstein GTWORX shocks with Functional Lowering Springs "BLACKS"

I've heard good things about that setup but for a little less you could go Koni yellow and any springs. I went with konis and h&r springs that are designed for the 3.6r and was very happy. The shocks and springs were under 1k.

Front and Rear Endlinks

I am a noob. [emoji38] Was wondering if endlinks would improve anything? Still do not know what brand to go with.

Unless yours are bad or you plan on tracking the car you don't need them. If you upgrade the whiteline adjustable are good but there are other good options too.

Bushings

Bushings are not necessary unless your old ones are worn but some poly bushings would definitely help with handling, unfortunately they will probably make your ride quality just a little bit rougher/noisier, not by much but if your picky don't do it.

https://www.rallysportdirect.com/fits/2010-subaru-legacy-3-6r-3-6/strut-tower-bars/cus-687-540-a-cusco-strut-tower-bar-type-os-front

Any strut tower bar will help but imho cusco products are generally over priced. You should consider a rear strut tower brace. People will argue this but I have one and it made a difference. Opinions from people that don't have one are pointless.

Steering Dampener Lockdown

No idea on this one.

You need to get lower control arms if you plan on lowering springs. Your camber will be pretty bad on the back without them. I had isc v2 on mine and they were around 400.

FYI, the 2013 & 2014 still have a 16mm rear sway bar.

Do Legacy GT shocks and springs fit on the 3.6r?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes.

That's because the Legacy GT shocks and springs are the same as the ones that came on your 3.6R. You're not upgrading anything if you buy the suspension from a GT.

I think he means aftermarket, which is still true

Any gt springs will fit but there are 2 different part numbers for the 3.6r and gt springs from h&r. The way I understood it was that the 3.6r motor weighs more than the 2.5gt so you need different spring rates on the front. Most companies don't make springs for the 3.6r and the gt are the same size so people use the gt springs but there is a difference. I went with the lowering springs that were designed for my car.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that you should get the 3.6R H&R springs for a GT (as per GTEASER), so while there is a difference, it doesn't seem to be all that big.

I agree, the difference is small. My mind set is that if your gonna spend the money, regardless if you can tell the difference or not, you should go with the spring designed with your car in mind. However if you go with a set designed for the gt I highly doubt you will be upset considering anything is an upgrade from stock.

A side note, I have gone back to stock shocks and springs. I loved the Koni h&r setup but I got a new toy car and the legacy has become my family car. I was occasionally hitting the front end while driving and wanted to go back to stock height for the ground clearance. My car still handles very well with the sway bars and strut bars and I don't hit anything while driving. The 1" drop is something to take into account on the whole swap. I was on coilovers before that and was about 2"lower, that was extremely impractical for daily driving. I think the best setup would be air bags but those aren't cheap.

First an 02 special edition mx5, then a 500hp built 1998 trans am, and now a 2004 Forester xt with full v8 jdm sti 6speed swap with brembos, and dccd. It was pushing 420whp at 20lbs but I'm rebuilding it due to a piston failure. It's gonna be sleeved with manly pistons, Eagle rods, ported and polished heads, +1mm intake and exhaust valves, BC 272/272 cams, FP green turbo, 1000cc injector dynamics injectors, and much much more. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160619/6ff1104627dd10e88d2b5e183c1ffa3b.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160619/298f7fdaa8f078d465787f078fd0f713.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160619/1e374d74bc20856e9712489ce1c0611d.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160619/316b68384dff35b36853b980946f4538.jpg

So you did all that but why didn't you raptor the leggy?

Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk

Reliability, the more mods I do to the legacy the more potential to break things. The legacy is now my reliable daily and the Forester will be my no big deal if it breaks daily. Sucks to only have one car, the Forester has been without a motor for 2 months now waiting for the block work to get done. Couldn't even dream of doing that on my only car.

Surprisingly I have had less issues after raptoring ( after I switched from AMR to XRT) but from what it sounds like the H6s last forever, even for a subaru motor

That's Not really a Forester anymore lol. Its a frankenwagon

I was on xrt but was having knock issues, he kept trying to fix the problem but after about 30 maps he wanted more money. I started looking for another tuner, now I'm with kiddo tuning or throttle happy as he's known on here and the difference is impressive. Xrt did a good job bringing the car to life but kiddo did a little better and brought reliability with it. Time will tell with the super charged 3.6r's out there but I doubt adding pressure will increase life expectancy. More power means more wear on the rod and main bearings among other things.

The funny part is that I was with xrt before any of the other 3.6r's were and everybody swore by amr and nobody was open source. Currently I'm the only 3.6 from the forums on kiddo that I know of.

Yes, the Forester will be a beast and should have me in the 11s, even with a super charger the legacy would never be that quick.

I'm not on raptor SC, just headers plus full exhaust...almost identical to perscitus, I won't boost that engine, not at 100k n def not without strengthening the internals

Yah bc AMR was the only one everyone knew of but I got to compare my car to perscitus, AMR vs XRT. Scary how different the car became.

A lot has changed in 3.6R tuning in the past year, more options and more support

I'll swear by AMR in they do fantastic fabrication but ECUTek severly hampered the car

Xrt is good, don't get me wrong, he did a lot for me and I'm grateful to him for that. I switched to kiddo and am happy but I have no doubt xrt can deliver. It was a while ago that I was with xrt and he's probably tweaked his maps for the 3.6 to perfection. When I went tactrix everybody else was going ecutek so xrt and I were early on in building the support for the 3.6 motor.
