Darren's build thread

@Brighton96 I found a crap Impreza with a good trans and engine that I'm gonna get for $200 and rip the mechanicals out of. Scrap the body and hopefully make my money back lol.

@doublechaz Yeah, the rod sheared off. Amusingly, the car was still running when I pulled over, although it didn't sound very happy. Trying to merge onto the highway, and, well, she gave out on me at 211,180 miles, but that was at 6k rpm. Suddenly, no power! Then a cloud of smoke from the back of the car! Then a loud knocking, then thudding, then banging, all kinds of horrid noises, but kept friggin running. I put it in neutral and coasted off to the side of the road, and awaited the towtruck.

I'm going tomorrow to take a look and likely buy an Outback Legacy. 1997, 171k miles, cold weather package, 5 speed. He wants $1000 for it. Hoping its a 2.5.

Are the headlights the same, as in, I just put new headlights into the Legacy, can I swap them onto the Outback?

Yeah, the old girl served me well. I don't plan on selling it... Yet. Depends on how difficult the stuff I want to do is.

I picked up a bit of a unicorn today for only $900 though...

When I first layed eyes on it in person.

Slotted rotors too!

1997 Legacy Outback, with a 2.5L and a 5 speed, WITH the cold weather package. Afaik, everything works, except the AC. There isn't a belt on the compressor, and its rusted to hell, but its the only rusty thing on the car. Probably gonna pull the compressor off the L and put it onto there. 171k miles, not bad for this thing. It's also got slotted rotors on it, so thats awesome. The direction I'm leaning with this car is offroad based, found an awesome website for parts for stuff like that. get-primitive.com I want to make this thing as good as a Jeep, so my first challenge is to change the clutch out. I can feel it slip when i nail it in 5th gear doing about 40. Second, is wheels.

I found out, in the owners manual, the car got a new used long block in 2004, and oil changes every 4 thousand, properly logged. I did an oil change on it today, and theres a big ass oil leak from under the car. Not gonna be till tuesday when i can get it onto a hoist. Thinking its just oil pan gasket, but COULD be worse, we'll see.

Also, 70k on the current clutch, time for a new one methinks...

Is mine a push style, or a pull style clutch?

it was my understanding that the cable clutches were pull and the hydraulic were push. i have one of each, and the cable (1996) does indeed pull that sucker in, and the hydraulic (1999) does indeed push that fork. hopefully someone will correct me if im totally off base, but that was my understanding. as far as clutches are concerned, i havent replaced either yet, ill be doing the same research when i come to that need as well.

Now that the Outback is in great running condition, im looking into engine swaps for the Legacy. So, The engine I had planned on building, i decided, its not really worth it to spend over $4k on an engine, that might not even work. I've decided to go for an EJ205, and while an EJ207 would be amazing, I simply cant afford the high premium over the 205. An extra 1500, cant swing it. I can afford the $1300 for a decent milage 205, and was wondering, would I be able to get a WRX PCM/ECM to run the engine, or would I need something custom, like a Haltech?

I wouldn't spend the money on that swap, I priced out most of the common swaps a while back. All the motors have pros and cons but the ej20 is just underpowered unless you get the turbo one, I mean, even less power than my 2.2 I wouldn't spend that much to lose power unless my motor was blown up. In my opinion, I don't want to dump the money into a motor swap unless it's going to double my current power, otherwise I'd rather put the money into other stuff.

ej205 is one of the turbo motors, from foresters and wrx models. i have two 205 engines in my shed, one usdm one jdm. the one problem/question i have with the swap for that motor is the low end power, i doubt it will be as peppy off the line as i want.

Yes, Brighton, i was planning on doing one from a 2005 WRX. I REALLY want turbo. I thought that the fact i mentioned a WRX ECU would clear that up. I'm not going to give up power. I would adore the higher power output of a JDM 2.0 (the ej207) but i cant afford it lol.

Oh I didn't see the part about the ECU, but yeah when I priced everything out I went to a few of the local JDM importers to see what a complete motor and wiring harness would run and the lowest I got was $1750. But then you account for a new sub-frame or notching the NA one, wiring harness splice or fabrication of a new harness so that your gauges work, exhaust work, brake upgrades to handle the new power and other pita adjustments. All in all I calculated about $4k when everything was said and done. I personally would rather just buy a stock turbo car and dump that money into mods rather than make an NA car turbo.

I was looking into something like this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/191979238280?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

The Legacy already has good brakes, but that splicing part has me concerned. I was hoping i could drop some computer in, and have it work, but my plans are to rip the entire interior out. Dash, seats, just leaving the drivers seat, and carpet. I wasnted to fabricate my own gauge cluster, maybe a pillar pod with boost, oil temp, etc, and a column mounted tach, speedo, and fuel gauge. I'm also now wondering, would any year of STI or WRX crossmembers fit into my car?

I'd be really hesitant to buy a motor sight unseen on ebay/auction site, I would prefer to inspect it before I spend that much. If you are just going to say f-it to all the stock controls and gauges then this would be an easy swap because then you could just use the harness with the motor, get a body wiring harness from the donor or similar car and then get a haltech and a racepack gauge cluster. I prefer to keep as much as possible stock. Wiring stuff really isn't that bad, its just very time consuming and tedious.

Yeah that's why I would rather start with a turbo'd car and just make it faster. Modding an NA car is an expensive and slippery slope. I heard that an NA ecu can support 5psi of boost though. When I was looking into doing a EJ22T build I found someone who was able to run it off of the NA ecu, but not without chasing CEL gremlins

This is gonna be a project car, so thats why i bought the Outback, to drive while the Legacy is out of commission. I got a friend whos a certified Subaru tech, and he said it should run no problem. However, is the 4eat strong enough to handle the EJ205T? I found a deal for a 205t and a 5 speed auto for $1400... was thinking about using the 4eat till it blows, (maybe it wont) and holding on to the 5 speed just in case

Well, should I replace the torque converter with something beefier then? I plan on taking this car to tracks all over the US, including, but not limited to, Gingerman, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Road America, among others.
