Before you replace the cat replace both the rear O2 sensor and the front AFR sensor first. Your second cat is merely an additional scrubber that isn't monitored by the ECU. If after those are replaced you still get P0420 its your cat.

More often than not its a failing O2 sensor that causes the P0420 code.

 

OK, so you guys would recommend replacing both upstream and downstream sensors first?

I would just do the rear O2 first. If you have a scan tool, I would look at the rear O2 sensor values (even better if you can graph them).

 

Excuse my 'noobi-ness' but is the rear the upstream or downstream?
