Zac88
So my gates water pump failed after almost 50,000km Should I just replace the pump and is it possible? Or just buy a whole other gates timing kit.
08SpecB_DE
That's a judgement call you have to make. Take the covers off and assess the timing belt. If it looks worn go ahead and replace it as well.
Max Capacity
OEM water pump or one from a auto parts store. Get a new timing belt from the auto parts store too. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Harsho1
I would suggest the AISIN TFK004. This kit has EVERYTHING inside the timing cover except the cam and crank seals. AISIN is THE OEM for Subaru. Kit can be had at Rockauto.com for $250. W/P by itself is over $100 and belt is over $150 from Subaru, plus you get all the pulleys, and the hydraulic tensioner in the kit.
Mike07LGT
Def do not replace with another gates pump. OEM is the way to go 03 WRB WRX (RIP) 04 JBP STI (sold) 07 DGM Legacy GT (RIP) 12 OBP STI (DD)

Paid around 350 shipped for the Aisin kit, Denso boot kit, Bando belts and NGK plugs. Rock Auto has become a major pita. Be careful with them, their shipping prices change by the minute and WILL increase if you don't order the first time...I have proof.
JmP6889928
Bando belts RULE! OE for most Japanese manufacturers with virtually no defects. I used to rep them.
08SpecB_DE
They were only around $5 a piece, I couldn't believe it. They are by far the best belts I've put on a car, especially cars without auto tensioners. I forgot to mention as well to get a different brand water pump. Rhitter
So to OPs question? Can you replace the pump without removing the belt? No right? Belt has to come off? My OBXT build
Harsho1
Of course you CAN replace just the pump, but you need to be careful not to get any oil or coolant on the Timing belt if you are going to reuse it.
Max Capacity
The belt has to be removed to replace the pump. You also need to slowly compress the tensioner to do that job. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). WahooNo2
i would just get the whole belt kit with pulleys, tensioner , pump and belt that way you have them if you need to replace them instead of having to stop midway through the project to get parts. depending on your total mileage you may want to do front crank seal on the oil pump. i installed the gates kit the last time i did my timing belt i got it from amazon also... i thought gates made the oem timing belts for subaru? __raj
I'd swap the belt unless changed recently. Also the original factory Subaru part on my legacy gt is approaching 200k miles and still working. I'd think twice before putting an aftermarket.
