VF 40 vs. VF 43

Recommended Posts

OK, help me out here. I know there are issues with the 2005 LGT with VF40 turbo and CAT up-pipe, but when did it change to the VF43 and no cat in the up-pipe? Has anyone had issues with the VF43 set up from the factory?

A vf43 is a turbo from an 06-07 STI. It is not compatible with a legacygt. The Vf46 replaced the vf40 and is used on 07-09 legacy gts along with an air pump instead of a Uppipe cat and topfeed fuel injectors instead of sidefeeds.

A VF46 is a fine replacement for the VF40 in your 2005. It should be a bit more reliable and is not a bad way to go if you are just looking to replace a worn out turbo. It's not much of a power improvement though. I would also say you wouldn't want put one on without a tune either. And once you are going to need to get a tune a buy a turbo anyway, most people like at least a little bit more of an upgrade, like a VF-52 or some sort of 16G. The marginal cost at that point isn't very high.

VF40 and VF46 are virtually identical in every way including actual performance. The exhaust housing is identical, the center bearing support is identical, the turbine/shaft assembly is identical, the compressor wheel is identical, wastegate actuator is identical, all of the internals (journal bearings, thrust plates and washers, piston ring seals) are identical. The ONLY difference is the shape and diameter of the compressor housing and compressor backing plate and it's of absolutely no advantage.

The VF46 is not more reliable, not more performance, and not an advantage at all except for replacing another VF46 to keep it looking as stock.

The VF52 is larger in every way and is an upgrade. If you go to 16G, then you're into new injectorland and new fuel pump land too.

Because Subaru wanted something new so they could talk about it in their literature. The VF30/39/43/48 are all identical too except for the shape of the wastegate actuator. They all use the exact same exhaust housing, center bearing support, turbine/shaft assembly, compressor wheel, journal bearings, thrust plates and washers, piston ring seals, compressor backing plate, and even the compressor housings are all interchangeable and yet they are on a multitude of years of cars with the VF30 being in the early 2000's.

The VF 52 is also exactly the same as all of the above except for the compressor housing having a flange on it the same as a VF40/46.
