Radars

Recommended Posts

+1 on the V1, but it'll be tough to find them in your price range. I don't know how folks with detectors without the directional arrows make it through their day -- their struggle is real

But seriously, knowing the direction of the "threat" is pretty darn useful. The V1 rarely gets false positives (like, a handful of times in the ten years I've owned it), but they can sometimes be filtered out with knowing the location of the threat -- i.e., the arrows.

For example, a couple of months ago the V1 started going off on the highway -- pointing forward. I slowed down but still slowly passed a beater pickup, and the radar direction suddenly switched to the rear. I let the pickup pass me, and the direction switched to the front. So I realized the pickup was causing it to go wonky, even though there was zero chance that it was a cop car.

I have no idea what that pickup had inside, but it was causing the V1 to trip out. If I didn't have the arrows, that pickup would've followed me halfway home, and the radar detector would've kept showing a full radar "threat" the entire time.

I debated a long time between V1 and Redline, but after a ton of research I ultimately went with Redline because it had two forward facing antennas with rear detection instead of 1 forward and 1 rear facing antennas in the V1. The logic behind it is, whenever you detect the threat, you are almost always going to slow down, but 99% of all speed trap is going to be ahead in the direction that you are going towards, that's why having stronger forward detection is better. If you are speeding and a cop was to pull up from behind, first he has to be going really fast to catch up to you and you would notice, and 2nd if he has to go that fast to catch up to you, he's going to know you're speeding and the RD wouldn't even matter. The past 4-5 years I've had the redline, speed traps are always ahead of me. V1 vs escort's line of RD is always compared, check out this comparison/review for more info.

FWIW, Waze has saved my butt more times than I'd like to admit but I'm on the road a lot. I've used an escort (the radar detector) which worked great and was saving for a valentine but since using waze daily along with always giving the road my full attention I feel less inclined every day to get another radar detector.

Radar detectors are a waste of money. By the time they go off, you are already caught.

Let's just say you're not quite correct. My radar, at times, goes off around a mile before I see the cop car. On normal roads and highways alike. It works both front and back (has to be mounted properly, obviously).

Yes, if the cop is sitting at an exit or a side street and you fly by, you're toast (or if they pace you), but if the OP is doing under 10 over and not weaving in and out of traffic, any decent radar will be sufficient for front and rear visibility.

I've been using this model for over 6 years now: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Whistler-XTR-140-Detector-Exclusive-Periscopes/dp/B000OHYIDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451843239&sr=8-1&keywords=xtr-140]Amazon.com: Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes: Car Electronics[/ame]

Ive got beltronics RX65, pretty good radar and you can pick one up fairly cheap now.

I have the Rx65pro as well.. these are in the $100 range now.. but missing lots of modern features.

might be time to upgrade.

This has been my baby for many years (upgraded once by Bel):

Quite a beast. Well reviewed and the "sti" is quite ironic. I take the "X" band off though. I also found that some of the newer cars that run car sensors can trip the "K" band. Rolling down the interstate and the K band alarm goes off... I slow down looking, alarm stops. I resume speed....goes off again, I repeat the process until I notice that when I roll past the car next to me, her mirror alert triggers at the same time my K band goes off..... had to laugh. Does the same with the rear sensors from cars too.

If you always drive at less than 10 over you won't need a radar detector.

So this morning me and a late model porsche carrera were playing a little cat and mouse, no dangerous speeds, with some guy in a prius trying to catch us and waze picked up the cop about a mile in front of me so I slowed down to about 5 over the limit and so did the porsche. The prius just flew by us AND right by the cop, so the cop pulls out and what does he do? He stays in the middle lane and never goes after the prius, instead he slowly moves to the slow lane and slows down like hes going to get back on the side of the road and then swooped in behind us for about 4 miles till I split off to my exit and the porsche did the same.

Even going a proper speed the cop still decided to watch us while the prius must've blown by him doing 75+ in a 55. If the cops a $#%& even radar wont help!

I sometimes carry one of these in the car to troll with speeders

But if I see they have a V1 I don't usually bother, or else I have to get really creative ;)

I've had a V1 for years, used it a lot going up and down the northeast corridor when I lived out that way (worked like a champ). When I was in TX, I stopped (Austin) except for longer trips - same deal here in NM - there really aren't many speed traps around. I like that you can upgrade it when new features come out, but haven't for quite some time.

I bought my V1 in 2005. I check the website yearly and in 10+ years I've been up to date.

It goes off non-stop on the highway. Audis and Porches with adaptive cruise are usually to blame.

Ready to switch to a passport

I turned off my X and K bands a looong time ago, and never looked back. In the years prior that I had K-band on, there was *one* cop (out of hundreds) that triggered that band -- all the others were Ka band. So that was a risk I was willing to take, given how frequently the bands would be triggered with false positives. And it hasn't ever been a problem, at least here in California. Obviously YMMV depending on what they use in your neck of the woods.

How do you turn off X and K?

My X barely goes off. Not sure I would turn off K because a few of the smaller towns in may area still use it.

I got mine back before they had laser detection, upgraded to the thick housing one when they added laser detection, then to the thin one when they slimmed it down. I have a version 1.8 hardware detector now, and have for quite a while (my last "upgrade" was in 2003). They are on version 1.85 hardware now, and have gone through a number of firmware updates on that. I could upgrade to the latest and greatest, but I don't use it nowadays, and can't justify $289 to upgrade...

I heard, but never tried, start digging your nose as you pass by the officer.... its something psychological that humans really try to not confront another person doing that action....

So you are saying we could all save ourselves from a ticket by picking our noses while speeding!
