Ryan's White Whale Wagon

Recommended Posts

Well.. today started with me installing my spats. I intended for that to be all I did today. Then I realized the JDM white and my USDM white are actually REALLY close and I won't need to paint that bumper and spats ASAP like I thought I would. I proceeded to take off my front end and then my headlights to do my retrofit and some mods to those tonight too. Taking it apart to build it back up better than before.

Finally bumper and grill are on! I also retrofitted TRS HID projectors into my headlight as well as LED bars for DRLs. Also sanded and polished up the headlights to restore clarity. The steps to doing the conversion were pretty straightforward but like everything with my car it took forever to do because of difficulty accessing bolts etc. Taking off the bumper itself and lining up the new one were the hardest parts, followed by changing the fender liners for JDM ones. I can't wait to get this STI lip on and wire up the rest of my light setup then wash up the car and take some good DSLR pics.

Had a nice sunny day and installed the lip today. I also gave it a wash and got some good shots. It's a really well designed lip and went on much easier than any other part I've installed so far. Good job Subaru.

Any pictures with your custom headlights with the DRL on?

My intention is to remove the foglight DRLs and use the light bars as DRLs but I haven't wired them yet. I built a wiring harness and I was going to use a fuse from the engine compartment fuse box as power but the ones I tried seem to cause them to stay on with the key out of the ignition. I have an amp I need to wire a power cable through the firewall for so I think I'm going to wait until I do that and then wire the lightbars to the ACC fuse at the same time unless someone else knows a good way.

Now that I've done a lot of the exterior stuff I've started a bit of an interior refresh. First up is a new autodimming compass and homelink mirror I got from another member on here. Second is a boost gauge and oil pressure gauge which I just installed with this custom A-pillar mount but haven't hooked up to the power or sender units yet. That will come over the next couple of weeks. Next thing on the list is a new leather red-stitched steering wheel from a 2011 STI maybe this weekend and I might be able to get my door speaker amp in if I have time.

One interesting thing I'm doing at the moment is building an accessory fuse box for all of my add-on gadgets in the cockpit. It will power my gauges, DRLs, Nexus and can be used to easily add on things that need power. It should be a useful little project.

Steering wheel is in and what a difference it makes! Don't spend $$$$ on a DAMD wheel when you can retrofit an OEM STI wheel and get steering wheel controls and cruise buttons for much less cash.

I'll be posting a youtube video on how to do this soon for anyone interested.

Futureproof your car!

Right now the cruise control works perfectly the audio controls I haven't wired yet and the bluetooth I haven't figured out yet. I just need to run some wires from the headunit to the steering wheel and the audio controls will work. For cars that came with audio controls from the factory like the Spec B and the Outback LL Bean, they could do this swap almost plug and play and everything except the bluetooth would work.

Alright finally hooked up these light bars. Took me FOREVER and I ended up switching the original ones for Morimoto XSB LED bars which are much better but not really as versatile as they advertise. I'm digging it.

Can't decide whether to run with foglights on as DRLs or just run them alone. Thoughts?

Thanks yeah I've had the fogs hooked up as DRLs for a few months now and finally rigged up the bars tonight. Some pictures I like them together some pictures I think just the bars alone look good. Gonna drive it around with both and see which I prefer. I just want to keep looking at them :)

I finally got around to it and ordered myself some new suspension. I thought about going with coilovers but instead ordered these Bilstein struts from a Japanese 2.0 Spec B wagon with STI pinks. It will probably be a couple of weeks until they arrive but I'm pretty excited to drop the height a little bit and see how they handle.

Today I finally got around to installing my 4-channel amp for my Polks in the doors. I used an Alpine MRV-F340. It was a pretty complex process and involved removing a good portion of the interior to run power cables, speaker wire, and RCA cables. I installed it under the passenger seat. There was a bar under the seat that looked like it was meant to hold some kind of unit from the factory (nav..?). After removing 4 bolts it came out and there was a ton of space to place the amp. I used 2 LOCs for the speakers and also installed an info/fuel panel relocation kit I got from Japan. It's important to note that the fuel panel kit is NOT a perfect fit. The kit is designed for Japanese models and so the gearshift area is a slightly different shape. The fit is acceptable enough for me but it's not perfect. I'm pretty sure it's the same kit you get from AVOjdm.

Anyway the Polks without any amplification sound pretty much like stock speakers. With the Alpine amp they sound amazing and I can hear things in the music that were not present with the other speakers. I set up the amp in such a way that if I move the seat all the way forward I can tune the settings and will work on that over the next little while.

Please excuse the wiring, I just wanted to make sure everything worked properly and I plan to clean that up in the next few days.
