bjkroll
Hey guys, So I've been desperately trying to identify exactly what engine I picked up from a scrap yard. They had little details on where it actually came from, and that was some time ago. As far as I can tell, its a EJ22E, phase 2. I came to this conclusion by the integrated timing belt tensioner. If I'm not mistaken, the original EJ22 (phase 1) had the tensioner with a hydraulic pulley that applied pressure to a pulley. Am I correct? Are there any other ways to identify this motor? Thanks for the input!
johnegg
typically they went to the new style tensioner in 98. but technically the phase 2 engine started in 99, and is not compatible with the 95 - 98 cars, think 00 - 04 cars.
fahr_side
As I know it the easiest to spot is the single exhaust port on the phase II heads vs. single on the phase I. There are a few hybrids out there though with a mix of parts, like older block and newer heads, or vice-versa. You'd have to search a bit for this info. bjkroll
Interesting. Well, I'd assume it was a 98 or later, and some type of hybrid. I've already had it in a 98 Legacy Outback and it ran just fine. All the wiring hooked up, no issues. It DOES have single exhaust ports (found an exhaust from a donor) which was the only difference I found. When you mention that they aren't compatible, what issues would you run into? I can't remember what air intake manifold I used... The one that came with the 2.2, or the one that I had on the original 2.5. Please don't think that I was lazy, I've been looking into this for some time, but was thinking that I've just over looked something.

johnegg
if it has already been in a 98 outback, it is NOT a phase 2engine. so do not worry that. swapping a phase 2 into a pahse 1 car is a lot of work, computer, harness and engine. it is a common mistake to call 97 - 98 ej22 a phase 2 engine because of the exhaust port change. but it is not. phase 2 took place in 99 with a complete change of the heads, not just exhaust ports. in 99 the intakes for the ej22 and the ej25 SOHC (00 - 04) will swap. this is not the case for the phase 1 ej22 and the ej25D. FYI: 90 - 00 ej22 blocks will all swap, some have EGR and some do not. 96 - 04 all ej25 blocks will swap, with the RIGHT head gasket, some have EGR and some do not. generally speaking, heads and intakes are specific to their model year group, 95 - 99 or 00 - 04. with 99 being a transition year and different for different models so double check. bjkroll
Ahh, ok. I was under the impression that the transition to ODBII was from phase 1 to 2. Apparently I did poor research. It must have been a year thing (pre-95?). Thanks, it's starting to make more sense!
fahr_side
You may find opposedforces.com useful for tracing at which VIN the changes occurred. bjkroll
Hey look at that, I found the VIN. Came out of a 98 legacy... Obviously a phase 1 motor.

bjkroll
Shiiiit. Yea that VIN behind the mount was awfully hard to read. Looks like its done with a Dot Peen mark.
Osei
I wanted to say like the old dot matrix printer, but too many here don't know what that was. O.
bjkroll
Hah! Yeeaa, old school yeah. But dot peen is whats used on metals, among other things. We use them for identification at work a lot..
twisty
hell, dot matrix are still used in a lot of places that need single line printing, i install them once in a while still. i looked at the vin on my GT 2.5 block, it doesnt match the car. i know the history of the car, and its never been replaced. weird.
