Plastidip issues

Hello all, I was looking for a new look for my 06 LGT and saw a few videos on the plastidip and decided instead of sanding and painting the gold rims I had I would try this plastidip stuff out. I ordered the color blurple with a metallic finish and watched a few how to videos from dipyourcar.com site! I have spray painted many things throughout my life with out issue and NO drips or runs!

Well unknowingly I apart a few test spots on wood in my shed before I even think of touching the rims as I would with any paint and it comes out like gunked up trash, I shake cans more and go for a few more try's same issue switched out nozzles with better ones I had laying around same issue. Call up dipyourcar where I ordered the paint from they say this is normal and how it works so I say it peels off I'll try it and spray one rim!!!! The rim looked horrible and the paint, drips, runs and looks like a plastic fork compared to fine silverware.

This is disappointing and regardless of being out the 65 it cost to buy as they will not supply refund I now will be sanding down the rims and going through primer and paint all over again.

Before I washed and dryer the rims

After sprayed 3 coats it still looks horrible! Called dipyourcar back and sent pictures they tell me it looks good and normal!!! Wow really!!

first coat you should only mist it on so the dip has something to adhere to when you spray the next coat a little heavier. You cant rush it take your time and dont soak one spot or it will have runs every where

Thanks for the info I was expecting it to be more like spray paint! I'm not really fan of it

I use plastidip the same way as I use a rattle can spray paint. Prep is the same and first coats are per directions from the can.

Never had runs or spots where it didn't lay flat.

The only way anybody would end up with runs is if you spray it too heavy without moving the can and with bare spots if the surface was not thoroughly prepped.

Anyway, I hope you'll have better luck and results the next time you attempt to use plastidip again.

I ran into a similar issue when painting my wheels, except it was only with one can. I emailed DYC and they asked for the batch numbers on the bottom of the can and let me know that it was part of a known defective batch and shipped me a new can at no cost.

All other cans worked flawlessly, however I give the cans a hot water bath between coats.

Thanks I might give it another try, when I called they told me the way the rims look is how it is supposed to look and that it was coming out good

Yeah I handled all mine through email. I let them know that one of the cans continued to clog up causing an uneven spray even after soaking the nozzle in paint thinner.

They follow up quickly and mailed my replacement within a day or so.

If you decide to remove the dip and you are having trouble peeling it in some places where it's too thin, you can get it off there without sanding by using Goo Gone. Will dissolve the plastidip.

I have used it a couple times - as long as the can is warm and you don't spray it on too think I don't have any issues.

I start with really light dustings and try to keep moving quickly, 10-15 minutes between coats.

Your third coat you should have complete coverage. It looks like you held the dip in one place for too long / maybe the can was cold.

Plasti-dip is very forgiving and using you can cover up small mistakes by just adding more coats (unlike real paint)

And just a heads up if anyone is thinking about getting gallons and Wagner sprayer. After a while the plasti dip might start drying in the nozzle and you'll need to clean it out. I didn't and ended up with a texture sprayed on my last coat.

one side note these plastic dip cans (at least retail cans) the can is so thin shaking it was causing the ball inside to dent the underside of the can..

And I dropped the can by mistake and it ended up making a hole and a whole wasted can..

but when I did my wheels it was a bit windy and a little chilly so it make kind of a splatter mess on one wheel but not that noticeable.

I will redo them this summer however.

The outcome before the clear coat was great but gloss clear coat had a silver sparkle tint that was ugly

Happy with this

I have used it a few times. First go, I was to far away from the wheel. They came out looking and feeling fury. They were also a pain in the ass to remove because it was to thin of a coating. Second time, I put the first coat on thin and went heavier as I put more coats on. I stopped at three coats on three wheels and four on the last. I jumped the gun and stuck my finger in it. So I sprayed the last wheel with one more coat to cover the finger print. The fourth wheel is a little more bronze now than gold. They turned out pretty decent for never using spray cans before. I went with the antique gold. Take your time and don't rush. Grab a few beers and give it another go.

I plastidipped my motorcycle helmet last year and it looked great. I love the flat finish it gives things. Make sure you keep extra cans for touch up as you'll probably get parts where the plastidip chips over time from getting hit with rocks etc from the road.
