To Change or not to Change that is the Question

Just bought a 90k maintenance package for my 2005 Legacy GT Manual, but I am getting mixed reviews on whether or not I should change my transmission fluid. From my understanding you can change it ever so often or do not do it all. Because once you do change it, the new fluid will start breaking away the parts in the transmission until you start having real problems. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks,

You should absolutely change your M/T trans fluid at 90k miles, and while you're at it, change your rear diff fluid as well. In fact, this is part of Subaru's maintenance guide. In fact, you're probably going to notice slightly better shifting overall with a fluid change.

Here's a link to the service schedule list:

Now... What you DON'T want to do is FLUSH your transmission fluid, that's where you can run into problems, and that's where most people run into problems.

That fluid needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. You should be using Subaru Extra-S.

3.8qts in the tranny and .8 qt in the rear diff.

They have just released a new part number for it in qt bottles. There is a thread about it int he tranny forum.
