OTS tunes are not really ideal anyway, but people have done it by swapping the wastegate actuator and boost pill from their old VF40 to the VF46.

Can't swap wastegate actuator-physically will not fit. Same value anyway and the pill is the same too.

I guess experts can disagree. Msprank says in that thread the stock VF40 uses a 1.25 mm pill while the VF46 uses a 1.0 mm pill. Part number are also different 14447AA120 for 2005 and 14447AA150 for 2007.

The Cobb Tuning website shows the pill sizes are different:

Based on this thread, the VF40 actuator is set at 10 psi, the VF46 at 8 psi. Also, the VF46 with stock actuator can work with the VF40 pill, but the maximum boost obtained is less than the stock VF40 configuration. The actuator bracket is different so not a direct bolt on, but adaptation is possible.

Plot twist!

So I pulled my old turbo out of the box I threw it in after it blew a year ago. Turns out it's a Vf46 and my car had already had the turbo replaced when I bought it. Keep in mind the vf46 blew at 109k. Looks the the going price for a "genuine" (hopefully) core is about 150 online. So I'm thinking about just buying a core and using it to put my vf46 back together and re-install it. I'm also probably going to gut the cat from the downpipe because I've heard they cause issues if oil has hit them. I'll be curious to see what boost levels I get with the vf46 in. I never had a boost gauge till after it blew and right now I get about 13psi with my knockoff vf40 with a manual boost controller.

I never heard back from Mike but the other replies here and my recent discovery have me at the conclusion it's totally fine to swap them interchangeably.

Thanks everyone!

Confirmed! 3 holes vs 2 holes. I tried to swap my AVO VF40 WGA to my VF46 and had 0 luck. Would have to modify the heck out of it to align up right. When it came to the VF52, I left it up to JmP and called it a day.

I know people have already addressed it but Mike got back to me and i said i would share what he said. this was his message.

"You should be "okay" with a vf46, as long as the restrictor pill for the boost control system is the vf40 one for that original car. The stock tunes are not that safe is the main problem. =)

Regards,

Mike"
