Timing Belt - 1998 Outback

Recommended Posts

Have a friend with a bad headgasket(s) on her 1998 Outback. Still working to get the vin for confirmation, but I suspect it's a 2.5L DOHC engine that's in there...?

Since the motor has to come out and she has 120k miles and no receipt for timing belt work, I'm telling her to change the whole setup while it's out. Looking at rock auto they have a gates kit "w/ integrated assembly" and "w/o integrated assembly". Will both fit? Is one better / worse?

Thanks for any help here. If another kit is recommended or if OEM parts are the way to go here for any reason please let me know. Will grab the waterpump also.

"Bullet-proof" your OEM TMIC! <<Buy your kit here>>

It's either integrated or not. They are not interchangeable.

Gates it's about the best set you'll get. Also do the seals (cam, crank, oil pump) along with the water pump. And since you're pulling the motor too, I'd reseal or replace the oil separator plate too as they tend to leak over time. The rear mains are usually good but that's for you to decide if you want to replace.

Don't cheap out and not replace the idler pulleys. They will be toast by the time the timing belt needs to be done again.

Integrated means the one piece tensioner. Non means the 2 piece. You may have either.

The mounting plates are different, so you have to get the correct one.

Get Subaru/ Cometic HG, the new Fel-Pro is MLS. Your choice.

A search for HG will give a few examples.

As previously stated, the FSM is available in the sticky.

Just take your time.

You will need a 14mm 12pt socket of good quality to get the head bolts.

o, thanks for the explanation.

the 98 should be the one piece tensioner, integrated.

97 was the last year for the 2 piece.

and to barman, the egnine is a 2.5L DOHC unless it has been swapped.

then it could be a 2.2L engine, which is better imho.

but since they do not usually have HG problems, it probably is the ej25.
