99 outback engine in a 97 outback will it fit

Recommended Posts

Yes, but a 2.2 would be better. It is due for T belt service parts, plus probable HG issues later on.

The EJ25D always has some HG issues. Once replaced properly it is very reliable. Valve adjusts are a real pain.

I know and that was in my mind.

I will be pulling the cam covers to check out the belt. I remember a subbie guy telling me a way to check to see if the HG has been replaced with the good ones but I can't remember.

Is a 2.2 a total dump in or must you change some things? I'd give up 30 hp but what the heck.

If the part of the HG that are visible are two or more layers, then they have been replaced. Tho they could have been replaced with a single layer which will be the same as not doing it properly IMO.

Do a search for posts by Johnegg. He keeps giving this info on a weekly basis.

Basically any 2.2 from 95-98 is direct drop in.

96-98, you need the Y pipe as they are single port exhaust.

No other changes. The only things that won't bolt up are the two 10mm's that act as a brace for the PS lines. Just leave them. If you wish zip tie, but not really needed.

Edit: you also have to swap the flex plate from the 2.5 to the 2.2.
