The "Installation of Cabin Air-Filter" thread in the "Walk-Throughs" section has a great interior tear-down:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1626

I keep forgetting if you're a 5MT or 5EAT - if you're the former, brother scans007 has a great page on how to pop out the shifter surround on his website, under the Cobb STS install section:

http://www.pimpmyauto.com/sts.htm

Unfortunately, Hope, you're on your own for the doors - I have no clue on this one. My best-guess is that someone who did AV-installs would have placed this on their walk-through or post, but since I'm not interested in this for my LGT, I've read very little on this in the Forums.

Best of luck!

i would assume he probably used very very fine grit wet/dry sand paper. at least that's what i had to usse on my last car and my truck before that. had a friend who was an automotive painter that gave me some (little) advice on how to paint plastic parts.

Dave, I scuff old paint off with 320 grit - typically called "extra fine" or "very fine."

400 to 600 for primer, more the former. However, for most of my hobby projects (here, specifically, this is for airsoft - where there is very heavy use of plastics), I tend to just try to use specific-for-plastics spray-paint, which usually bonds exceptionally well, even without primer coating.

Clearcoat I either apply after using 1000 or 1500 grit, or just apply straight to the final paint coat without even sanding.

I usually just go for the "3M Auto-Pak" wet/dry variety/assortment pack, it'll have all you need. Easily had through any automotive retailer for very little dough. :)

Read through the rest of the thread for various hints/tips from other members. It's something that's very easy to do once you get the hang of it. Practice is key. Look around for some scrap pieces of plastic to practice, and you'll have it down in no-time.

Anyone who cleans their rides as nicely as you and your cuz should *easily* be able to master this kind of trim painting with less than a half-day's worth of practice (remember the time it takes each paint coat to dry, that's why your "training day" may last so long, and again, patience is key).

what grit sand paper did you use? and how many coats? Also, did you use a primer coat?

Im def going to try this. I have a nice scratch where my radar detector fell :(

I used 250 to get out the scratches and 320 all over all the parts. I did not use primer because I used the specific plastic paint (Krylon Fusion). After I was done sanding I wiped it down with alcohol. I then hung them and sprayed 3 coats of satin black Krylon Fusion letting dry 30 minutes between coats. Paint both front and back for even coverage. I then sprayed 3 coats of Krylon Crystal Clear on top of that, waiting 30 minutes between coats. Be careful when sanding around the chrome trim on the ash tray door, it scratches very easily. Don't forget to mask that off with some tape and trim with an exacto knife. If you have an automatic you'll have to remove the shift surround and mask the gear selection ovals and the "+" and "-", some tape and an exacto knife does a great job. after all this is done you will be itching to re-install in the car...DON'T. Let the pieces cure for at least a day before re-installing, I found out the hard way, beleive me. When this is done you could wet sand the clear if you want, I chose not to because I liked the look that it had (slightly textured). Best of luck, post the pics here when they're done.

Hey, I was able to take the little chrome trim piece out of the ashtry so I don't have to tape anything.

here is a pick of what I will be painting and the two side pieces (not in the pic). Also notice my scratch top left of shifter.

I didn't, just masked everything off and then sprayed it.

Rick

Ok, I couldn't stand that so I took the chrome peace off and removed the tray from the housing. I just got done sanding all the pieces....

Can't wait to see the pics when you are done.............What brand/type of paint did you get

Same brand as doodog. I didn't start painting yet, I just wanted to post a pic of what it looks like sanded. I will start to paint right now.

ok here is where I am... I have all pieces painted black... these dang little spiders made some webs on a couple of the pieces so I got the 1500 and sanded it down and repainted... Im going to try and spray the clear indoors. Its so hard cause dirst in the air just sticks to it. I def would recomend doing this all inside!

Also, should I use the 1500 after the last coat is dry... the 1500 I used seemed to scratch it up where I don't think it would look right if I did the clear right after sanding...

Wow, that looks GREAT! :) Two thumbs up! I really like how the black border/trim offsets the major console controls.

Very nice job, Dave!
