Rust Mitigation

Hey all, I am looking for some advice regarding slowing down the rust that looks to have started at the bottom of my drivers side door. It is in the metal fold at the bottom of the door and seems to not be sealed. Any ideas how to clean this and seal it? I've attached a couple pictures to give you a better idea where this is.

Dinitrol or Tectyl.

 

But the protection should have been done when the car was new, the best you can hope for is that you can slow it down.

 

Clean as good as you can, make sure the car is VERY DRY then use a penetrating wax - don't forget that you have to add it from the inside of the doors too.

And don't forget to have breathing protection when you work with that stuff - the solvents aren't good to inhale.

Your car is RBP, correct? I would gently remove as much of the rust as possible and then use the EXTEND on the outside. The wax that Nils talks about is great to put on the inside to stave off any other water penetration. Once you do clean up the outside and put the EXTEND on it, you'll need to paint it.

 

I too, have RBP and out of necessity, I found this paint that is as absolutely close as you can get to RBP and it's actually a Ford Dupli-Color paint called True Blue. I had a large scratch across my back bumper cover from a shopping cart that had decided it should go on a journey and unfortunately, my car was in the way. It wasn't a gouge but 2 scratches just through the paint. I cleaned it thoroughly, prep wet sanded it lightly with 800 grit just to soften the edges, and sprayed 3 very light coats of this paint over it, then 2 very light coats of Dupli-Color's clear, and then buffed and waxed it and while it's not absolutely perfect, you really have to look hard and be about a foot away to actually notice it. I had about a dozen of my other Subaru friends who had seen it with the scratches look at it and everyone thought I had a body shop fix it, so it matches well. Especially where you'll be painting, no one will ever notice. The photo, while a bit fuzzy, shows the cap off of the paint with name and part number.

I noticed the same spot happening on my car. Unfortunately because that edge is rolled you'll never stop it completely unless you remove the door skin. However you can slow it down by stripping the area as best as possible, treat it with some type of rust converter and seal it. I would apply the rust converter inside the door as well as the outside...... liberally so it soaks in, then apply some type of sealer inside also.

The only rust on my car is in that exact same spot as well.

Thanks for the advice all. I guess I will try hitting it with the EXTEND treatment first and see how that goes. It's in such a non visible spot that I don't think it will need repainting after. I'll keep you all updated.
