bnguyenbb6
Been a long time since I've updated but I've gone to a handful of events and finally feel like I've sorted out the car enough although still improving it. Events in San Antonio are now affiliated with Club Loose so I'm planning on heading to all of those since its an hour away. Also planning on driving some Lone Star Drift events depending on the calendar(at least the GGP Houston Rounds). Things I think I've done the last two years: -Went back to TMIC and E85 to keep the car cool -IATs are terrible on grid(160-165F), big drop in HP due to this(fans?) -DSS 1000hp axles, no issues with 3rd or 4th gear clutch kicks -Put the rear sway bar back on, went up on spring rates to 13F/11R -Extended control arms and modded knuckles. Used Suburban/Escalade inner tie rods. Up to maybe 45-47* of steering angle -Installed ASD handbrake(inline). There's two lines going to the rear, just throw on 2 M10 T's. Pretty easy install. Hawk DTC-70 rear pads -Differential bushings are shot, group N trans was flexing. Went solid billet trans and poly diff bushings Middle of Texas winter so I didn't wash the car: photo by Danny P iPhone pics:
SkippBeatz
Amazing! We NEED videos! Right now im getting ready to swap in an 04 sti 6spd and i cant decide on if to go rwd or stay awd. This will be just for fun, but remain a street car. How would you say it drives compared to awd?
bnguyenbb6
Before the solid transmission and diff mounts, it drove about the same around town. The only issues with RWD are the axle situation if you like to drive hard and getting a little stuck if your car lifts a wheel on hills. I still street drive this car; its registered, insured and everything.
legacybt
You mentioned you went back to TMIC for cooling reasons - was this on the track, grid, or everywhere? I'm debating between TMIC and FMIC right now, and have talked to a few people who have recommended TMIC to keep coolant temps down as well. SkippBeatz
yeah i had a fmic and went back tmic. it does affect coolant temps, but my core was slightly BIGGER than my radiator. so if you use a smaller core it should be less of an issue. Also switched from mishimoto to koyo and that made a huge difference. Even when i went back tmic.
bnguyenbb6
You mentioned you went back to TMIC for cooling reasons - was this on the track, grid, or everywhere? I'm debating between TMIC and FMIC right now, and have talked to a few people who have recommended TMIC to keep coolant temps down as well. I thought at the time that the FMIC was blocking the radiator but turns out that wasn't necessarily true. In drift, air doesn't flow like it does road racing and the stock radiator was only lasting about a lap and creeping to 210-215. My upgraded radiator didn't quite clear my huge IC piping so TMIC was the route I went(for now). As mentioned, on grid, I heat soak really bad with a TMIC. 165* IAT's at 40* ambient and it stays at 165 during the run. If I can get my IC piping to clear the new radiator, I may go back to FMIC but If I can get fans on the TMIC, I'll stay TMIC. My car isn't a competition car so coolant temp just needs to stay cool for maybe 2 laps and IAT isn't that important if its not knocking. TMIC for me is simpler; two places it can leak, two couplers, solid OEM mounting, OEM fitment. FMIC IMO does outperform though.

bnguyenbb6
Videos below! Did not make it to Club Loose Texas Opening Moves but towed out a tire trailer on E85 to Lone Star Drift Round 1. It was very apparent I needed a realignment but I'm definitely starting to feel more comfortable in the car. Clutch kicking WOT toward a wall and not crashing is a great feeling For Club Loose Spring Moves, my buddy and I realigned the car with some toe in to add some bite in drift. It definitely felt better and more comfortable but the track was super bouncy. Maybe looking at stiffer springs/new shocks later. Here are some iPhone pics and video links(don't know how to embed) as I wait for some track pictures from local photographers. He probably had just as many laps in as I did until he nuked a tire. Video starts off with him driving his 600whp turbo BMW(as seen in the pic above) and driving my car starts around 3:50. bnguyenbb6
Heading out to Lonestar Drift Round 3 at Houston Police Academy in 2 weeks and Club Loose Memorial Moves the week after. Just need to do some maintenance and see if a pusher fan on the TMIC keeps IAT's under 240* . bnguyenbb6
Found a little bit more angle in the car making it easier to drive since I'm not constantly at full lock. IAT's are still shooting up to the 200's so the TMIC is going to be replaced soon. Next will be a little bit more power and some adjustments to the suspension. Its still very soft. Here are some pictures at Lonestar Drift Round 5. Videos are on Instagram @asianthoughts
