Finally got work in...

Recommended Posts

How's it going team. So last time i was on here I was looking for a engine. So i got a JDM engine for a good price. only 40K on it.

Got it all set up, But I forgot to change the Cam Sprockets. They were slightly bent.

Just when I thought i was gonna hit up the road. and then BLAH...

But here go some pix

P.S: Its hard to find Cam sprockets, so if you can let me know some places for good prices. That would be great.

I keep finding them for Toyota Supra, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Oh. I forgot.

I put Borla Header and New brakes. K&N filter on stand by. And New clutch and throw out.

-- When I went to turn her on. She just kept cranking, and just about to turn on. But NO. she wont.

So im hoping its the Cam Sprockets.

P.S: I put 5 gallons of gas in ..

My guess is the sprockets as you mentioned, your going from DOHC to SOHC is what the issue is. if it's an option, try to grab an plug in an EJ22 ECU from a SOHC L model in the third gen range

that way you may not have to open up the motor again

That looks like a phase 1 ej22. It is not what you need for that car.

His original ej251 was sohc, so thats not the trouble.

If your valve covers look like this, and you bought timing gears for the 99-01 ej22 the cam sensor is not reading correctly and it will never fire. You'll need 90-98 ej22 cam gears before it will start up. Even still you'll have some idle issues becasue the iacv's do not function the same.

Any n/a ej ecu will run any ej n/a engine as long as the sensors read correctly. Over at ultimatesubaru.org people run ej22e's on ej25d ecu's all the time when they swap them out.

00+ was SOHC EJ25 not DOHC.

cam and crank sprockets might be the issue. Also generally when you swap motors you keep the intake that matches the ECU.

Where is the JDM sensor?

I put almost everything on from my OLD motor. All plugged right in place. No problems. There.

I do have crank pulley. Just need can sprockets/pulleys now.

Anything out by you guys?

JDM sensors as in.. all the sensors that came with the motor from japan..

namely the Knock sensor, those have different end between DOHC and SOHC and since you've not mentioned running into anything like that, you may have missed it

*86bratman Sorry I didn't see your post & pic. But, yes that what my valve covers look like. And I did change over all sensors. So now I have to look for 90-98 Cam gears correct?

I will try.

Is their anyway to fix the rough idle in the future ?

I have an untested theory about the idle issue. Untested because I have no phase 2 cars or parts for them. Anyways, the ej18 from 93-98 ran with a throttle body mounted iacv similar to the phase 2 ej22/ej25. In theory one could use the intake manifold from an ej18 the orginal ej251 throttle body and get around the idle problem.

I've torn apart quite a few ej22's I'll try to get through my parts drawers in the next evening or two and see if I can find some cam gears.
