By shudder I mean that I feel the steering wheel shake not like violently but enough to be concerning. Almost feels like I'm turning on gravel but I don't feel like there is any actual slip occurring.

Is it only the steering wheel shuddering (how fast, like machine gun fast) or can you actually hear the wheels slipping, like you were on a gravel drive? If you had someone else drive and you were outside the car would you notice anything?

Just curious because torque bind in the transmission could give the same type of sensation in the car that I think you're explaining. That would only be if you are experiencing something within the car and not just in the steering wheel itself.

Have you checked the condition of any of the fluids in the car to see if they are burnt or too low? Check power steering fluid for darkness. Also, check the transmission fluid for color, smell and level. It should not be black or too dark and shouldn't smell burnt. If you're not sure what it should be like check a newer vehicle to get a baseline of good clean fluids.

The 5eat center diff is nothing like the 6mt one linked above. And I would bet it is much more than $400. It is also generally less problematic. I would look at other causes first, I might even take it into the dealer and pay for a diagnostic in this case.

I do wonder what OP's definition of shudder is or how it's shuddering?

Mine would bang and slip rhythmically from the outer and inner wheels trying to spin at different speeds. I could actually hear the rubber of the wheels sliding on the dirt in a parking lot. I could feel it in the steering wheel a bit as well.

Yeah it happens when moving at low speeds, like, 10 mph and below, but not while stopped.

Unfortunately sounds like a center diff to me. It's a fairly expensive part ~$400.

Does it only happen when the car is sitting still and you turn the wheel or while the car is moving and you turn the wheel?

If it's while moving, I would say you have a bad center diff.

Started cutting the KYB donors apart after work yesterday. Drained the fluid and got one cut apart before I had to head home (doing it at the shop after everyone headed out). Not too bad, but have to take your time on getting a good cut line started with the pipe cutter.

It was difficult for me to start cutting into a perfectly good strut, when I did mine. I always have that feeling when modding something that is perfectly fine on it's own, but I can't leave it alone.

I noticed when I did mine that the pipe cutter mushroomed the cut end a bit. I just filed it down till it was flush with the inner wall of the shock tube.

Hurry up and get it done, so we can have some pics!!

RECIEPT SAYS: "Oil is leaking from cam carriers, valve covers, and bank 1 headgasket. Recommend complete engine reseal $2,800. Oil is leaking onto the exhaust and causing a burning odor".

All of those are possible leaks, but I would put my money on the valve cover actually leaking and leaving spots on your driveway/exhaust. Those seals harden over time due to the heating and cooling cycles in the engine compartment. Then they aren't malleable anymore and the vibrating of the car shakes them from their seal. It's a pretty easy job and you only need basic tools to get the job done... just saying.

Run your fingers on the lower corner of the valve covers (both sides) closest to the firewall and see if you find some oil wetness there.

There are seeps and there are leaks, I only repair leaks.

That looks like pretty decent footage, it's got a pretty small foot print and it's cheap.

I see some of them have motion detection... it wold be cool, but not sure I need it. I try to park far away from the general public as it is.

Anyone using a dash cam out there?

Any practical use tips, like if there's a minimum resolution for good results or if any of the bells and whistles are worth while?

Also, I would take any specific suggestions of cams people have used and had luck with.

I did some searching, but there's endless options and I'm looking for a way to separate them all.

You just purchased it, so I would take it back to the dealer you got it from and have them deal with it. Take a look at the drive belt before you go anywhere and make sure it doesn't look compromised in any way.

If it is the belt rubbing enough to smoke and smell I would stop driving it because it's going to break very soon and leave you stranded.

I agree about the flat black or carbon fiber being better than the glossy black. It was what I had on hand and was inspired to try it out. I figured the worst that could happen is I would have to remove it. I'm getting the windows tinted soon, so you won't be able to see it as much from the outside.

I'm also not a huge fan of the wood trim in the car and was thinking of getting some new trim pieces from Carid instead of trying to cover them in vinyl. I guess I'll see what i have ambition and money for when the time comes.

I finally got the grill all painted and installed. I have been putting my isolation time to good use.

That wagon is begging for some color on those wheels.

I got the LGT out of hibernation and out for the first drive of the year!

I gave up on the baggy diaper of a leather wrap for the steering wheel... for now at least. I might revisit it later.

I had a small sheet of black vinyl sitting on the shelve and decided to wrap the three trim pieces on the steering wheel because I had it apart for the wrap. They came out pretty decent, but I'm not 100% on the shiny black. It might look better with the new leather wrap, I'll live with it for a bit and see how I like it over time.

Are you going to remount the emblem?

I'm going to leave it off for now, so I can get as much air to that heat exchanger as I can.

This mod gave me more space behind the grill. That allowed me to move the heat exchanger higher up and more in the air flow path. That was the main reason I performed the mod, but it looks good so far too.

I guess I ran out of picture space in the last post...

Here's the installed shot... it doesn't have the chrome trim painted yet, but you get the picture.

If anyone wants any additional pictures, just let me know. I won't be installing it until I get the paint delivered and the trim painted.

Grill Craft mesh grill insert install

These are the two main tools I used for installing the mesh grill. I also used a stubby screw driver and a drill.

It's a 80 grit pad on the angle grinder and a small tooth metal blade on the saw. It both cuts and melts through the plastic.

I'm sure you could use a hand hack saw/file of some kind and it would just take a little longer.

There's 4 screws you need to remove from the back side of the grill, in order to remove the grill from the car. These directions come with the grill, so I'll skim a little.

Once out of the car remove any remaining screws from the back of the grill. There are two tabs you have to push down to remove the chrome center trim piece, I used a flat head screwdriver to push them down. Removing the trim piece just makes cutting out the mesh easier.

Now, start cutting.

This is the mesh section you cut out of the stock grill.

I just cut right where the cross pattern meets the solid part of the grill. You don't need to worry if it's little sloppy, you will be cleaning it up.

Another shot of where it's cut. There are 4 sections where you cut through solid pieces of plastic on the grill... the middle upper/lower and the sides where the chrome center trim terminates.

This is the tab and ledge you leave when cleaning up the edges of the grill. The tab is the mounting point of the Grill Craft grill insert and the ledge is what it rests on.

Here is a shot of the top edge after it's cleaned up with the grinder.

Here is a shot of the bottom after clean up. I just followed the "line" that was naturally there from the plastic moulding. You can see the center lower tab and screw that attaches the bottom of the insert as well. You can kind of see the side tab too.

Was the mesh from Custom Car Grills? Also, how was it trimming out the inside of the grill?

Cutting out the mesh wasn't too bad once you get past the fact that there's no going back, just take the dive and start cutting. I'll post up some pics and a little write up today.

ohh, ive got the limited with the leather everywhere and the nav and what not. I just assumed all gt's got the leather wrapped steering wheel but obviously im wrong lol. I live near the mi/in border so I see lots of salt and I didn't have much issue reusing my links when I installed a 22mm whiteline rsb. that being said its probably smart to have some replacements ready, if you don't use them you could just return them. if you got a good pair of needle nose vise grips and an impact you'll probably be fine though

I finally figured out how to hook up the IAG AOS to the 5th gen LGT today. I need to grab a couple of adapters, some extra 1/2" hose to complete the hook up and I should be able to do that tomorrow. I will take a video and some pics tomorrow as well and post a how to thread.

I also got the Grill Craft insert installed on the grill. I'll put some pics in my build thread about it. I'm waiting for some Silica black paint to show up in the mail, so I can paint the remaining chrome trim to match the car.

I also will take a video and some pics of the AWIC and heat exchanger install tomorrow and post it soon as well... I know, promised long ago.

Drivers side Front fender, right? You can always replace the entire fender or just put touch up paint on it to hide as best as possible.

Agreed, looks like it would be easier to find a paint matched fender from a salvage yard and install, but I'm not a fan of painting anything on a vehicle.

I imagine it will push me to want the Brembo upgrade too...

I hit my garbage tote while pulling out of my driveway. Paint has always seemed to chip or scratch easy on this car. What's an easy and cheap DIY way of preventing this from rusting?

 

Does anyone else think the car has cheaper paint than others or are they all like this? Never had an issue on other cars. One time I rested my pick up's door on my Legacy's door and it scratched the crap out of it. I even set the door as soft as can be as I knew I was doing it.

I have always known Subarus to have soft paint that is very scratchable... just looking at it too strongly could scratch it. The body panels are pretty thin as well.

What part of the car is it? Might be easier to get a salvage yard body panel and just replace it.

Hrmmm I'm actually up in Appleton, might have to make a roadtrip down there one of these days
