  1. LW - really not a fair comparison due to differences in the chassis. All else equal the car with the shorter wheelbase will feel snappier on turn-in due to the moment of inertia. Think of trying to spin a ball versus a dumbell.

There are several other factors that could play into what you are experiencing. Wheel/tire specs would be a major consideration.

That makes sense! Was comparing on equal 225/45/17, but wheelbase didn't even register for me

  2. The 05 STI rack is not an upgrade.

That STi rack came in the Saabaru from the factory (as well as the 06-07 WRX), and is noticeably quicker than my LGT's steering. Might not be as tight as the '15+ STI unit, but it's definitely tighter than the Legacy. I drive them back to back almost daily.

edit: did some digging and most sources say both racks are 15:1... however, they don't feel the same to me :iam:

  3. What an idiotic quote. There is no such thing as 100% certainty. No one has anything close to perfect information.

By that rationale there is no such thing as 100% negative certainty, then, either. So that would make the consequences of a decision pretty important, no matter how small the chances.

  4. You guy have some fast LGT's, if you don't want to take step back to a high 300hp 12 second sports car.

Nobody is talking about a new Cayman S. The car I'm considering is a 2008 model. Per C&D, that's a mid 13 second quarter mile. My LGT is faster in a straight line, with just an exhaust and tune. In daily use (not just magazine racing), it feels substantially faster because mid-range torque.

I haven't tracked both cars but my Legacy would likely win around slower and mid-speed twisties (I've got lots of suspension and braking mods, instead of power mods). But even a stock Cayman would dominate a high-speed aero/handling course like the 'Ring. It's got better feel, balance, and aero. No question.

The Cayman is a much better platform for a track/sports car, but it's under-powered. That's why I want one with boost.

Can we put it to rest now, dgoodhue?

  5. I've read that they had this problem in development -- they were grenading differentials and snapping driveshafts. I'm sure they've resolved it before the car hit manufacturing, but I also think that engineers/manufacturers vastly underestimate the abuse their customers expect their cars to hold up to.

When it looks and feels like a video game, people will treat it as such. Drift mode for all the points!

  6. Is there a specific model year you are deeming to be slow? All but two have sub 5 sec 0 to 60 and 12.x 1/4 mile times. Not slow by my reckoning. And they can handle...

Like you said, numbers rarely tell the whole story. They get off the line very well because MR engine layout, light weight, and good gearing. However, mash the gas at highway speed, and you'd better get a snickers

Have you driven one? Or are you magazine racing here?

  7. They may feel gutless, but I would bet they can beat most 400 lb ft cars around a race track. It's all subjective, posche motors rarely produce massive torque but I would bet they have more area under the torque curve than most cars. Peak numbers are meaningless when it comes to performance.

They are definitely great track cars, that punch above their weight when properly wielded. Still gutless!

Torque is what you feel on the butt dyno, and I want more than the Cayman has to offer in stock trim.

  8. Our work for peace must begin within the private world of each one of us. To build for man a world without fear, we must be without fear. To build a world of justice, we must be just. And how can we fight for liberty if we are not free in our own minds? How can we ask others to sacrifice if we are not ready to do so?... Only in true surrender to the interest of all can we reach that strength and independence, that unity of purpose, that equity of judgment which are necessary if we are to measure up to our duty to the future, as men of a generation to whom the chance was given to build in time a world of peace.

  9. I have been told by two sources that there is machining involved if you use an STI LSD in a TY756. Have you done any measurements?

I misread the first question. Pretty sure you're talking about the 5th gen+ 6MT, and the WRX 6MT. The spec B 6MT is a completely different animal, altogether. The STI front diff should work just fine in a spec B box, but not in the new TY756.

A WRX LSD will work, but it is 2x the cost...

Do you mean an aftermarket WRX LSD will work? Thought the WRX has an open front diff.

  10. Woah. Forged aluminum nuggets!

If I didn't know what had to happen to create those, I'd think they were pretty cool.

minimum driver weight for conference is 185. I don't think that rule has ever been enforced, tho. Class minimum weights, other than ST @ 10lb/hp, keep things in line pretty well.

Sorry for quoting old news, but 185 minimum driver weight would exclude most race drivers, no? Silly rule, I'd have to gain two stone

NASA is a little different from ICSCC in the way they calculate the numbers because NASA doesn't include TQ, so I can actually set it up for a lot of torque, say 360 Tq, as long the HP doesn't exceed the 310.

Another silly rule! A stump puller with a flat, broad 310 HP plateau would have a huge advantage over a high-revving motor with a peaky 310HP curve.

They should definitely include torque in the equation... or, not, since Subaru advantage! Wouldn't want to come across a 310HP diesel, though.

  11. There are only a handful of logical markets... the CT/NY/MA tri-state has a huge Suby population, just like OR and CO. VT/NH/ME have a high per-capita, but nobody lives there. Throw in CA too, but for the opposite reasons. Doesn't sound like you guys want to go across the country, so CT area is probably the best place to be.

I vote Danbury or Stamford area; closer to me :D
