    I believe the major problem with cavitation would be loss of circulation. The AF lowers surface tension of water which prevents bubbles forming. Bubbles also decrease the heat transference of coolant.

     

    The NICO site I used to frequent (and still visit) when I had my J was full of AF talk. The Q45 V8 could be prone to overheating.

     

    (As an aside, one interesting discussion was started by a guy who thought it stupid that Nissan engineers would have a belt driven fan instead of electric ones. Turns out that the heat generated by the 4.5 was such that the electricty needed to run an apropriate sized fan would require more energy to work than by powering it mechanically with a belt. There was also a weight and space penalty with electric.)

    Perhaps your mileage would increase if you used the recommended premium grade fuel. Would be interesting to see if it made a difference.

  3. One number for gas mileage is pretty meaningless. The type of driving you do is the primary variable for mileage, and that can't be accounted for in a one-number mileage poll. I get about 21 in surburban driving and 28-29 for freeway cruising.

     

    The one number combines at least two things: vehicle efficiency and overall vehicle application. The poll is "open" so one can look to see what members are getting which mileage.

  4. Three modified LGTs getting 30+ mpg. Interesting.

     

    I had a chat with an experienced LGT head who was running an outsized turbo. He felt that because the larger turbo he had takes longer to spool (and look out when it does!) that he was able to cruise unboosted which decreased his highway gas speed gas consumption getting him into the very high 20s. His response to this poll's question was at odds with where I thought he might vote but that's maybe only because he doesn't "cruise" all that much. :lol:

  5. ^ There are a lot of variables to be sure but with enough responses we should get a nice curve. The poll does show clear milage cut off points for the majority of LGTs at >18 and <26 mpg.

     

    One of the cool things about the NAV/info system is that you can log up to 6 mileage periods.

  6. I think mods throw what you'd expect out the window.

    With some mods that decrease MPG (stage 1) and others that increase it (stage 2+) and a good mix of stock and even maybe 2.5i owners, you get a pretty random mixing of stuff. Also, some of us put in our real MPG vs the requested trip computer readout, once again throwing it off.

     

    All true. Polls are very tricky to set up. This one is an open poll so one could check the types of vehicles and mods to extrapolate more trends.

  7. Interesting that we're not getting a bell shaped curve with 105 responses. Could it be that driving style is coming into play with the LGT. The car does go like hell and can be driven that way with no ill effects (excpet for fuel bills). It also can be relatively easy on gas if kept out of constant high boost.
  8. I think they used to use coolant to lubricate the water pump, but, I am not sure that is so common anymore. with plastic impellers and sealed lifetime-lubed bearings, I am not sure it is as much of an issue anymore.

     

    But I could be wrong... and plain water is a decent lubricant, with a lot of film strength and surface tension, especially as long as it is clean. It isn't oil, but I am not sure you want to be adding that to your coolant.

     

    Water is one of nature's most powerful solvents. The lowest I would go even in warm climes would be 70/30 H20/AF.

  9. Vimy -- How do you mean?

     

    The LGT is still a newish model and long term problem/issues trends have not started to appear yet. My previous car was 95 Infinit J30t and the site I frequented had lots of owners with cars well over 120k miles. A great deal of the talk revolved around PM (preventative maintenance).
