  1. Very cool. Love the grill too!

Those black wheel are very shiny. It almost makes them look like a deep metal color. You've murdered out pretty much everything from trim to lights. I'd love to do my lights with the ruby red color inside. Did you bake them to crack open the casing or did you do something else?

I had someone else do it, but he said he doesn't do 5 gen lights anymore. The chrome in the light does chip off very easily. On my 4gen LGT, I just baked it open but it fogged. If you wanna do this, contact Scott (IDRVSLO). Do it once, do it right, that's pretty much how I did everything on my 5gen.

  2. Awesome rims. :)

Which ones are those and what did they run you? I'm a huge fan of the nickel color, or is that just the lighting in those photos that make it look darker?

    FIVE:AD's R5:F 19x8.5" +45mm

The finish is black PVD (physical vapor deposition). It was a really bright day so its actually darker in person. At night, it looks like a really glossy mirror black. They only made a limited of 5 sets in this finish at 5x100 and I got the last set. It is now discontinued... :p

  3. i will be getting them much before the end of the year so we can meet up. i love going down to sd and partying in the gaslamp quarter.

for those on the fence about the swift spring upgrade, there is no comparison. The stock springs on all these entry level coilovers are horrendous. they give a harsh, jarring ride due to the progressiveness of the rate. a shop out here was going to destroy a set of fortune springs to test the progressiveness of the spring and what the actual usable rate is. they are expecting it to be extremely high as the spring is compressed. The Swifts are linear and therefore you get a much smoother and less jarring ride. the rate stays the same throughout the entire spring travel. the spring could be 90% compressed and the rate will still be, say, 7k.

Yeah, I was at Swift's office/shop here in socal and they showed me the spring dyno of every competitor that you can imagine. Only Swift's material+design gets you the consistent rate throughout the entire spring compression, every other brand's rates is all over the place when compressed.

I currently have a bunch of other mods I'm working on, after that I got 3 more project/mods I wanna do before getting coilovers. But my schedule is to get coilovers before the end of this year so I could really start to enjoy the car. I come back from SD to LA area every weekend so when I get it I'll hit you up.

  4. blklgt05, where did you get the quote on bc coilovers with swift spring upgrade? I was thinking about just getting a quote on fotune auto 500 coilovers. Thanks

    http://www.importimageracing.com/bc-racing-br-series-coilover-kit-for-10-12-subaru-legacy.html

On the right you have option to add Swifts. Talk to Josh and ask him if you can get $150 off if you order the coilovers w/ swift springs ;).

  5. And the Swift spring upgrade you guys are talking about isn't the same as the standard Swift Sport springs that I currently have on my 3.6R are they? Swift springs designed for these Coil Over kits, right?

I haven't been around in a long time, work, life and cameras have been consuming my spare time. But this is interesting. Glad to see others finally making stuff for our cars!

I have swift springs, but the ones I was talking about is the upgrade springs that goes with on the BC coilovers. I already got quoted for about $1190 shipped (that's the price with the swift springs installed/they can also do custom rates). This is the BC 53mm monotube coilovers with F/R pillowball mounts, 30 way adjustable with front camber adj. I think BC is good enough, they also manufacture for HKS, greddy and other well known brands. Sure if you have another $1200 to spend KW V3 would be nice even thou it does not come with pillowball mounts and you'd have to pay more to upgrade the springs, but for $1190 I think that's quite affordable for those who want a complete upgrade.

  6. I bought these specific to my vehicle, although the box says for 2009+ LGT. Taiwans weird I guess. I bought them from Importimage Racing. They were the first to get back to me on pricing, so I gave them the business. As far as fitment, just plug and play. I removed the swifts and horrible KYB's and installed the BC's with perfect fitment. No need to use anything from oem struts such as top hats. BC's come with the pillow ball mounts. I have driven the car twice and so far it's night and day. Now I don't have to try to avoid every bump or dip in the road. The BC's handle them just fine. I am going to adjust ride height today and snap some pics. On dampening, they come 8 clicks out of factory which is track inspiring, but would never suggest for street use. I adjusted to 22 and it's much better. May even go up a bit more. As far as hard cornering, there is no tire besides a racing slick that could handle the BC's. My car is on rails now. Do note that I have never been on coilovers before so this is my biased review of them lol. I am sure the KW's are great, but so far, I am very satisfied at under a G shipped. Build quality is great and dampening adj is super easy. I'll let you know how the ride adj. goes.

Thank you so much, that's the exact information I need. Looks like I'll be upgrading to BCs in the near future. I think our 5th gen Legacys started in 2009 in Taiwan/Asia. When I upgrade it, I'll be changing the springs to Swifts'. I'll update you when/if that happens. :)

  7. Found time to get the BC's in but not adjusted at all yet, more pics to come...http://img.tapatalk.com/c6e4e236-c82b-a69c.jpg

Nice, I have some questions cuz I'm also thinking about switching to coilovers instead of Swift springs.

Where did you buy it from? Was it for 08 WRX or 4th gen LGT? Were you able to keep the pillowball mount in the front? Did you use stock top hat for the rear? Thx!! :p

  8. So who would you think would be the best company to approach with this idea? I've read the 4th Gen write-up done by the guys at Fred Bean. And to be honest, for that kind of performance, I'd do that work. With the right tools (pipe cutter instead of a hack-saw) it doesn't look that hard to do.

We can ask to have one of the coilover guys donate their OEM dampers and see if Koni is willing (since they've done this a lot) to make this happen. If that doesn't work, then we'll see if msprank (Mike) is up for taking the donated struts apart to do the measurements. After that, we can just look for a match from Koni or Tokico. The incentive for someone like Mike would be using the donated set as core exchange (since it wouldn't matter what miles you have on the OEM dampers) and charge people for the dampers and labor.

Come to think of it, I believe Tokico should have our measurements anyway because if I remember correctly, don't they manufacture our OEM struts? What do you think?

  9. Maybe this is a better place to discuss this topic. I saw this http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...ll-145744.html in the "Swift" sport spring thread and thought this would be a killer way to go if this is available for the 5th gen. cars. Maybe a bit more work than just ordering a whole set-up from someone like RCE (who knows when those wil be available? Yeah, coming, I've heard that). But also they are Konis!

Fred Bean sells the strut inserts and rear dampeners for the 4th gen cars. And at a fairly reasonable price too. I guess I'm just wondering if these strut inserts could work in our cars too? Are the strut bodies simular enough? Or is the travel on the 5th gen way too short compaired to the 4th gen?

I remember koni inserts being an option on the 4th gen, but it was a hassle where I think most 4th gen guys didn't want to deal with since there were so many different options. Since our 5th gen has no option period, this is actually a pretty good idea. At least I can't see how konis won't be willing to make a kit for us since there's not much R&D/additional cost to it. It doesn't have to be exclusive for 2010+ Legacy since its just an insert. All it takes is for them to obtain the measurements, and find the right strut insert in their warehouse that will fit our struts.

  10. Has anyone had any experience with k sports on a 2010 legacy? I just came across these http://www.vexmotorsports.com/Ksport--Kontrol-Pro-Damper-System--Subaru-Legacy-2010-Up_p_9586.html

I remember ksports were one of the earlier available coilovers for the 4th gen legacys. But then more than one member had problems with it leaking and I think people just stopped buying them soon after. Similar thing happened for megan racing and I was one of the victims. At first many people got the megan racing coilovers out of a group buy and loved it, then there were more and more reports of it being unreliable. Mine made noises after a month, and in 7 months both rear strut were problematic. There were other problems reported as well. I remember this member had his MR coilovers on his outback and he posted pictures of it leaking badly.

I don't know if the quality of ksport and MR has gone up for our 2010+ Legacys, but since I've always read/heard good things about BC's coilovers, why not try those instead for a similar amount of $? If you got the extra $ to play, I would even get KWs. But if you wanna be a test mule for the rest of us, try the ksport out and do a long term review about them. :)

  11. Curious, why just a recommendation for swift? I've tourchered the car on the RCE Blacks on and off pavement. This is with 18x9 rims with 35 offset. Tires have never hit the fenders.

Given the soft spring rates of stock, any change is a good change. Myles has been the only visible and clearly interested fabricator over the last few years. Given the departure of the Fth gen from 4th in many areas, Myles involvement from the start, his requesting test cars and so forth made my selection simple.

I wish I can explain the comparisons and their past relationship regarding the 2 said companies, but since I don't represent Swift, I can only be nice and express my personal opinions. :) About RCE's black springs for 5th gen, they do have a nice market for those who wants an improvement while keeping more stock-like clearance.

For moderate drop with 2 finger gap F&R, Swift would be a great choice. I understand it may not be the more appropriate drop for all, but it would great for most and believe me when I say that their springs are very well engineered/tested while working with data acquired from Subaru's engineers. Swift's manufacturing/quality control are also very strict. For example, if the spring-ends wind up to +/- 1mm, it is not good enough and they won't even ship it.

Swift's aftermarket business is only about 10% while the rest is all focused on various racing industries throughout the world, so you'd never see them in the forums. But from what I know and in my opinion, I know they test/analysis all competitor's products and has tons of data about them. Swift uses a superior material that allows very consistent data on the dyno. It produce fast coil response, less unsprung mass, and it does not have the break-in sag. To be honest, if Swift didn't make springs for us, I would definitely have gone with KW-V3 and swap out the springs to Swift, but that'd be too much $$$ for a dd.
