'97 Subaru Legacy Outback

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I recently purchased my first Subaru vehicle this week. It's a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback, 99,xxx miles, all major maintenance recently done within' the last year (Timing Belt, Head Gaskets, Wheel Bearings, etc.) at a reputable Subaru dealership. I'm still decided what direction to head with this vehice, but I like it as is.

My previous vehicles:

A few questions I have for y'all. The headlights are a little too 'dim' for my liking. Any suggestions on headlight swaps, or bulb upgrades for the short term? Any one use the Rally Armor basic mud flap on their outback? Are the wheels 5x100 pattern? Thanks guys. I look forward to becoming more knowledgable on these vehicle.

Welcome and nice. I have flapatax on mine and love it (gt sedan). As well, I think the wheels are 5x112. Probably wrong (being I own one I should know).

As for the dim headlights, check connections to ensure you do not have unneeded resistance to your lights. If they are good and housings are in good shape try for sylvania ultra or 5000 hid bulbs

Thanks. I'm not sure why the links for the pictures are not popping up, but i'll try and fix them. I'm leaning towards the RA basic flaps, but just wanted to see if anyone has ever installed them on a vehicle like such, or a write-up possible.

Gotcha, thanks for the suggestion. Surprisingly I have not had the vehicle driving at not yet. I dig the bigger fog lights these vehicle provide.

On another note, boy is it weird cruising at HWY speeds. I drove 100 miles back home from where I purchased the vehicle and the vehicle was pushing 2750+ RPMS @ 65MPH, which I thought something was completely wrong with the transmission/engine. I just did some research and seem like these vehicle normally idle at these RPMs so nothing to worried about. A bit coming, from an XJ and 4Runner that idle at 2000-2100 RPMs @65 MPH.

hi MC, hope all is well in your world today :) i thought the same thing when i took my leggy on our 1st road trip, hittin around 2900 rpm @ 75 mph, a few 100 higher than my ranger turns, but i reset my trip meter on a full tank before i took off and did rough mpg estimates as the miles clicked away, everything seemed ok mpg wise so i figured she was runnin good.

Thanks for the Welcome I.U. Yeah, I was quite worried initially but glad to find out that is just how these vehicles operate. I'm currently in the process of peeling off the awful, home-installed purple window tint that come on the vehicle. What a PITA!

Quick question for you guys. It appears as if the PO had locking lug nuts installed on the vehicle, but never mentioned or gave me a key for them. What's the best way to get these off? I would hate to get a flat tire and be completely SOL'd. Thanks.

That's what I thought, but thank you for confirming that. I am thinking about painting my wheels that I have on there right now graphite, but I also might go in search of the standard steel snow wheels, as I have always liked the utilitarian look.
