HO2 Sensor, Bank1 Sensor1

Recommended Posts

I just got CEL With blinking Cruise light.

Went to Advanced Auto and pulled the code out. It's P0031.

- HO2S11 Heater Control Circuit Low

- Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 1

Did research and found a thread that mentioned the following site:

http://engine-codes.com/p0031_subaru.html

First thing I want to check is the fuse mentioned in the page above. I've checked out the 'vacation pix' but I still can't really pinpoint the fuse I needed to check.

Any hint?

Most likely its the front O2 sensor. Buy a OEM one. They seem to work the best. If you need to change a rear O2 a after market one will work fine.

The Front O2 is behind the plastic panel behind the right front tire. Easy to replace if you have a good O2 sensor socket and a hose clamp to hind the socket closed.

Put a light coat of anti-seize compound on the threads of the new sensor.

I wonder if the issue could have been caused by STP fuel system cleaner that I put into the gas on my last fuel up.

If that is a possible cause, then I guess it would be a bad idea to replace it now since I still have 3/4 tank of fuel mixed with the cleaner.

Nah, doubtful it's the fuel system cleaner. If your car is a 2005 and you have near 100,000 miles.. it's not too far from the end of it's life. Replacing that front O2 sensor helps the engine tune the fuel/air ratio better and can result in better gas mileage (it did for me @ 89k). Autozone/advance auto part worked well for me too.

Autozone/advance auto has oxygen sensor wrenches you can rent for free. MUCH better than using any cresent wrench.

^Thanks! My car is only 58k though.

Right now I'm about 50:50 on resetting the ECU by unplugging the negative cable....

On one hand, it probably will clear the CEL, but, on the other hand, I'm probably just masking the problem.

I just had to swap out mine after 98K.... Same Code.... I bought a $40 Code Reader and cleared the code, but it popped again..... New Sensor - No issues since.

So try unplugging the cable / clear the code and see if it comes back - Can't Hurt at this point.

I know some guy's have run there stock O2's forever. I have replaced both of mine, on the wagon.

I'm thinking about doing the MAF sensor too, just because. Some say they don't last forever.

Had to replace the same one from that same code. Definitely buy an OEM one if possible and be aware that the 05's can have a different wiring harness depending on when during the year they were made. Look at yours so that when you order one, you have the correct one. I ordered one, albeit from an internet "autozone" of sorts to save cash, and they sent me one with an incorrect wire harness. You can find it's harness in the back left area of your engine bay close to the strut top IIRC. I wish I had a good picture to show you but let me know if you get stuck with that and I'll try to clarify further.

Updated parts list since original part-out here.

So, the CEL light went off late last night. I didn't ask the part guy to clear it or anything. The light was still on as I was driving home from the part store last night.

Since I didn't think that the problem went away, I took the car back to the part store and have them check it again. The code still shows up on the reader and it says that it's "Confirmed."

Is this normal to have the code without the CEL on?

For the part itself, I believe the OEM one is Denso and is available in Napa part store too.

alternatively, i helped a friend install another one on his 06 and this should work too (DENSO -with prime shipping!):

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Denso-234-9120-Oxygen-Sensor-Ratio/dp/B001F799X6/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1366474814&sr=1-1&keywords=Denso+234-9120]Denso 234-9120 Oxygen Sensor (Air and Fuel Ratio Sensor) : Amazon.com : Automotive[/ame]

I'm more inclined to believe that MAF sensors should last forever with a cleaning here and there, but front O2 sensors have to come in contact with hot gas and oil combustion byproducts. i dont see how they could last 200k on carefully tuned cars like ours.. maybe on less "performance" cars that can deal with the reduced sensitivity.

^I think that model is not for the 2.5i NA (w/o California Emission)

Here's the code:

Oh sorry, I didn't realize you were NA.

But you should be able to find a sensor from that link I sent you.

The NA engines are in the front of the service manuals. The GT's start around page 1600 in the 05 manual.

Subaru Part number: 22641AA15A (I believe the same part is Denso "DEN2349122," available at Auto Part stores.)
