Hail damage - Paint Prep (previously Vinyl Wrap Prep)

It's neither here nor there. Dent guys can easily make $2-3k a day depending on area. Do they often. Doubt it. Even if they worked only half the year that would put them at about $365k a year. not likely. Everyone would be a dent guy.

But it's off topic from the thread so just let it die.

But anyways op have you given any thought to plasti dip?

I've never heard of it !! There is a local guy that can do the vinyl for $450, materials and labor, Prices seem to be so different between here and the states for labor intensive stuff ??? Whats the cost for plasti-dip ?

Tonight I did a wet sand on the bonnet. Came up real nice. I need to prime, sand then refill a few spots. I dont mind repeating the process a few times, it gets easier every repeat and makes it look goooood....

Well if he can do it and do a good job for $450. By all means go that route. That's a steal. Here I've priced a wrap job and your looking at 2-3k depending on the wrap.

Vinyl for $450? Seriously? Even cheap vinyl for the whole car cost $250-300 for a roll. I got 3M and I spend a good $800 just on vinyl, not including other materials, PLUS labor.

Yea I spent about $350-400 for my dip and that was 3 gallons. Should have ordered 4 but it was my first time. But our cars need 4 gallons or 5 if your going with a custom color.

So yea that about $450 just for dip and doesn't include labor if you don't do it yourself. Really would like to see some of this guys vinyl work.

Theres a few diff places that will do it for round the 450-600 mark...

http://www.gcwraps.com.au/

I'm still contemplating doing it myself, I've never wrapped before, and im pretty fussy about the outcome... so we will see... still up in the air. What im most worried about is that the cheap places wont use 3m, or avery quality film...

Good pricing for sure... I work at a sign shop we do a lot of wraps as well... to do whole car one color would be $1000 plus. It when you want to include graphics and such that makes it more costly... design time etc. And some wrap vinyls don't require lamination lam can cost more than vinyl.. if your not printing graphics on them I'd go for the wrap cause you can always change it a year or so down the road if want a different look.

Well, I went to see GCVinylWraps - and he quoted me 2500-3000 for the wrap. I mentioned the ad for 450, and he said he doesn't do that anymore.

We call that the bait-n-switch.

I'm kinda pissed. and suprised. You can get paint cheaper, why the eff would you vinyl ?

Exactly why we all figured there was a catch to it. But yea paint can be had cheaper than that. But you do get those that want wild colors like chrome and gold or textures that you can only achieve with a wrap. But yea that pricing seems more usual.

But if your looking for the under $1000 range plasti dip is probably your only option.

!!do not i repeat do not do white!!

Considering a roll of wrap vinyl is anywhere from US$1000-3000 depending on finish and texture, and a competent installer will charge anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on complexity, i'd say that $450 promo was some serious BS or a misprint.

Today is my mums bday, so I honored her by working on the car all day haha...

Some updates...

I'm not sure if I'm willing to tackle the vinyl myself or not. (Time to rename the thread lol) Painting is becoming a great option. The time factor is something im looking at. I have tonnes of other things I need to do to the car. 200k service, bodykit, rims, suspension etc... Either way, I cant pick a color, please help !!! I'm very boring when it comes to this. I think there is only Black and White.

If I go the painting road, I'm going to have to scuff up the rest of the exterior. I know where I can hire a booth, and borrow quality gear.... It's hard not to lean that way.

Anyways, Here is the grill, the paint on this was flaking, so ive sanded i back and primed it ready. Just coated the mesh in some matte I had lying round.

There was a huge crack in the boot lid plastic cover. I have repaired it, and its ready for some sanding / paint. Superglue tsk tsk...

An example of the some of the small imperfections im working out, sorry if theyre heard to see.

Boot, Just about perfect, I'm doing guide coats, and then fixing issues, and the last one i did as near perfect. Need to sand back once more to confirm.

Bonnet, Coming along nice.

Full car - I'm driving it round like this, Getting lots of weird looks. I'd leave it in my mate garage, but i Miss it too much...

I agree it would be a shame to put in so much time and effort into the body work then get a shitty paint job. If you have all of the body work it self done. Mask off all you can on your own. Mask off all trim so all painter has to do is fill it in. You shouldn't be charged too much to get it painted.

Most of a paint job cost is in the prep work. Hell you could also pre tape then show up to your painters lot early and finish cover all of the windows your self so all they have to do is roll it in the booth. Or trailer it there.

So.... You boys are on the right track :) I'm going to go even further, and do it myself haha. One of the boys at work has a mask, another a regulated gun, and ive got sandpaper and the ability :) If i fist it, I can always take it somewhere :)

BUT !!! What color. How do I start a forum vote ? hehe, I keep coming back to "gloss black"... But i also want to go a color that leggys dont come in. But staying classy.

I know how you feel about choosing a color. Luckily I have about a year and a half to toss around a couple color choices. But from te looks of the patience you have with the body work. I'm sure you'll do fine painting. I would just find a scrap body panel at a junk yard and prep it and practice. That or just get a bunch of sheet metal squares. Prep and paint those. Paint them the colors your debating. So you'll know how they actually look painted and cured. Then pay them against your car and see what looks good.

Be sure to post pics. Good luck.

Couple of updates:

I've been working on getting the body really straight - I have had only 2 problem areas, on the roof where its meets the rear window - a stubborn dent to fill, and a major one on the bonnet, where a seam fades into a flat surface as it gets higher, I have found it really hard to rebuild the seam to the right shape etc, I'll see if I can get some shots this weekend.

The rear bumper has been off and primed, there was little damage to it, so it was a joy

I've also de-badged it, there are 2 grommets in there that I may fill in - I havent decided.

I've taken off the side skirts and side protection thingys, ive filled and primed them ready.

I think I may have decided on a color also, What do you guys think??

EDIT: Its a nice dark grey, with a hint of dark blue - very sexy, if not this then black.

I am almost ready for paint, after this weekend I should be ok... fingers crossed.
