Should I keep my '08 LGT 5EAT for the MRS.?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

When I bought my LGT new, I bought it with the 5EAT because the intention was that I would drive it for four years or so and then give it to the MRS.

As much as I've loved this car, I'm now wondering with the turbo if it's a good choice for long term ownership?

It has 55K miles on it now (bone stock), and she only drives about 5k miles a year, but I hear these horror stories about blown turbos and engine rebuilds, big bucks! :spin:

So what do you guys think; keep it, or sell and buy something simpler like maybe a two year old Impreza? She could care less about the power.

I plan to keep mine past 500,000 miles :) in the long run its always cheaper than buying a new car.

I hear you, she now has a 10yr old Civic sedan that has been absolutely trouble free, but the LGT is a far more complex animal...

Probably over thinking this. Blow turbos aren't the norm. You hear about problems on the internet like they happen to every car. They don't.

I expect your tubro will go an easy 100K. Which would be 10 years of driving for your wife and cost 1-2k to replace there after. Cheap.

I plan on never getting rid of mine. I've NEVER going to have another car payment. I have 6 vehicles now and they are all paid for including my LGT. With proper maintenance and no crashes to compromise it, there's no reason it shouldn't last pretty much until you get sick of it.

A properly maintained and lightly driven turbo will typically go 100k. As long as she's (or you) is good about watching the oil level, it should last a very long time. Remember there are tons of WRX's with 150k+ on the original turbo.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I've changed the oil and filter religiously every 3500 miles since new, had the coolant and brake fluid changed per the maintenance schedule.

Never had any trouble with it (knock on wood), but was concerned that it might not be a reliable low maintenance $ vehicle for the long haul.

Feel better now, doubt she'll ever get it over 100K miles.
