baj
A couple of weeks ago I had the coolant replaced in my '07 2.5i with about 65k miles. Today I noticed that (with engine cold) the upper radiator hose was partially collapsed. When I opened the radiator cap air rushed in and the hose returned to its normal shape. There was a soft greenish/brownish sludge on the inside of the radiator cap that cleaned off easily. Is my problem(s): A: need new radiator hose B: need new radiator cap C: the shop used the wrong type of coolant that reacted badly to whatever was left of the orignial coolant and produced the sludge I found on the cap And what do I do about it? 06silvarubiLGT
Replace cap, doesn't sound like its venting the pressure
c-lo
I had a brown sludgy substance around my upper radiator hose at the connection to the radiator. turned out both my upper and lower hoses needed to be replaced. 258k miles - Stock engine/minor suspension upgrades/original shocks/rear struts replaced at 222k/4 passenger side wheel bearings/3 clutches/1 radiator/3 turbos
ACK88
This just happen as well, but on my Impreza. Replace the radiator cap. The brown "sludge" is part of the coolant conditioner that Subaru used to help with the rubber components in the coolant system, nothing to worry about. Unless of course it's oil and coolant mixed... then worry
lunarx
Apologies for reviving an old thread, but these posts have been very helpful to me. My upper & lower radiator hoses were also collapsing on a 07 LGT. When I finally noticed that the reservoir overflowed, following a top-off, I decided to search the forums. Turns out I had (2) suction caps. An aftermarket 16psi on the Surge Tank and a factory 108kpa on the radiator. After much confusion (at Subaru Parts Counter) I found out; Surge Tank should have a 108kpa [16psi] suction cap. Radiator should have a 137kpa [20lb] pressure-only cap. Not sure either cap was defective but having (2) identical caps was obviously bad. Installed new factory caps of each and all is good. Hoping this info is helpful to someone else.
