Will leaving a Bluetooth ODB2 Scanner Module plugged in drain the battery?

Recommended Posts

I currently have one of those Amazon el-cheapo ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 Module, and it works well enough. However, it came with no instructions whatsoever. Is it okay to leave it plugged in when the car is off, or will it drain the battery? I did notice that the LEDs were still active when the car is off and the unit is still plugged in.

If it is constantly looking for devices to connect to it will draw some current. You could try measuring the 'dark' current with the dongle connected and disconnected and see how much difference there is. That will give you a good idea how long it will take to drain the battery.

I leave my Tactrix Openport2 connected at all times unless I'm tuning other cars with it or out of the country for more than a week, though it's a USB device, not Bluetooth.

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.
