c7000
My heat shield recently started making noises after the car warms up and while it's running. The "noise" is the exact popping sound all heat shields make when they cool. My Subaru dealer said it was the heat shield cooling. The strange thing is it never made these noises before except after the car is shut off. Is this a common thing among Subaru's?
kred
I had the same problem after I installed my magnaflow exhaust, so I just ripped it off. If the noise bothers you, I would say just get rid of the heat shield that's making the noise.
Indiglow
Kred, why do you have a GT badge in your grille?
kred
Just for looks, like the scooped hood and turn signal mirrors I have. Literally everything about my car is LGT, just not power wise.

I Donated Too sigmafour Posted February 22, 2013 I Donated Too Share Posted February 22, 2013 What's going on here? Who is upset about the sound their rice crispies are making after they pour on the milk?
kred
Brakes? Directional mirrors? Dual zone climate control? All or nothing Actually, you got me there. Brakes are OEM 2.5i brakes.

kred
Is this the new rice thread? No, I was just trying to be helpful, then everything went down hill. Why am I being attacked for modding my Legacy the way I want it? After all, this is a 2.5i thread.

aac0036
It's a 2007 Legacy 2.5i SE w/70k miles. Can removing the heat shield cause any problems? Sorry, which heat shield are you referring to? The 2.5i has a LOT more heat shields than the GT, some of them get in the way.
I Donated Too sigmafour Posted February 22, 2013 I Donated Too Share Posted February 22, 2013 @OP lots of people have removed heat shields with no ill effects but they are there for a reason in some cases... just use your best judgement or if you don't have any then leave them alone and let the things ping as they heat up or cool down. They be okay. @Kred with a GT badge. You weren't attacked we were just caught by surprise.
kred
Sorry, which heat shield are you referring to? The 2.5i has a LOT more heat shields than the GT, some of them are pretty unnecessary. Exactly, which is why they can be ripped off without harming anything.
aac0036
^ I edited my post right as you wrote that because I don't want to give the impression that they're totally useless, of course they have a purpose as sigma said. You just need to use your best judgement when deciding to take them off. For example I removed mine on the midpipe before the second cat because they got in the way when I was doing fabrication, and there was sand and small pebbles pinging around inside anyhow. Indiglow
It's to keep the floor board from roasting when in traffic.
c7000
Thanks for all the answers! Good to know the sound is normal. It's not loud while the car is running so I don't think I'll mess with the heat shields. I think the floorboards of the car are mostly plastic. I Donated Too sigmafour Posted February 22, 2013 I Donated Too Share Posted February 22, 2013 WHEN IT IS ALL COLD have a look around and poke at it all - see if things creak and move because something's rusted through and let go of a shield. Just in case...
