FWIW, I think you can adjust idle with the Cobb AP.

But if that site is saying TB, have you run a can of fuel system cleaner through the engine ?

I wouldn't think so, but you never know. I do know I never touched mine when I had the manifold and in the back of the car.

I'm kind of with the mind set, if it ain't broke don't fix it and don't touch things you don't understand.

May be boost leak will show a hose has popped off.

You have zip tied them all, right ?

yea I did.. The one I didn't to the brake booster blew off 3 days after I did it.. go figure the one I missed..Im going to do boost leak test tommrow with some soap and water.. if nothing major comes up with that test, looks like TB it is.. I visually checked all vacuum lines, unless theres an issue under the IM that I cant see, but I sprayed right under the intake with the carb cleaner..

I just want to make sure cars electrically and mechanically sound (other than compression issue) before I get the engine build going..

I understand about making sure the car is running good before you do something major like the engine.

That's why I did mine on my time and not wait until something went wrong.

Back in the mid 70's I had me heads rebuilt a month before I did the bottom end. In Portsmouth NH back then, Robin's auto parts was who did most of the heads. Hanging out at the auto hobby shop I noticed a lot of guy's were having problems after having thier heads rebuilt.

I wanted to make sure the heads were good to eliminate one fault that I make come up against.

The only issue I had was the car wouldn't fire up. It was late at night and the shop was going to close. At 8AM the next morning I opened the hood, noticed the choke on the 4 barrel was closed, opened the choke by and hand and the engine fired right up on the first crank.

Boost leak test result: Heard a hissing noise coming from drivers side under intake area during test, sprayed down area with soapy water and could not find any bubbles, couldnt feel any leaks. Removed TMIC and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. I didnt remove any lines or anything to do the test, so Im wondering if maybe it was an evap valve releasing or something..

Switched back to OEM TMIC, didnt want to bother with the IPR it will be up for sale. Roadtest after went well. Still felt the low idle coming on, it didnt try to stall this time, but it was running about 600RPM @ idle. So at this point I believe the stalling to be coming from the Throttle body itself or the computer. Computer has already been replaced in this car once about 3 years ago. So Im running with TB. I will be picking one up from a member sometime this weekend. ohh yea had to nut and bolt the turbo on the rear bolt.. Those flanges are like butter soft!!

Hoping that will take care of the stalling so I can worry about getting the motor taken care of before it gives up the ghost. In the meantime she sits..

  • 1 year later...

So its been about a year or so since I spent a lot of time on the forums. Bought an 01 forester for a beater- since the LGT always likes to be worked on, then the Wife wanted a house last year so I took the build funds and ended up getting into a house. So now that we are settled there and almost used to all the bills etc- trying to narrow down what I want to do to the car.

To take care of the idle issues/last year maintenance- replaced OCVs, Throttle Body, and O-rings on intake manifold, cleaned MAF and reset computer, replaced turbo since it gave up the ghost after trying to fix the idle..

So Ive started to compile some stuff for a budget build- updates on first post

Im starting to do more piston research now- I live in MA and as you all know it gets cold up here so starting to wonder what material pistons I should go wtih MAX/TL/Boxkita any suggestions??
