Bought a Miata

Recommended Posts

Yeah I read that thread and got so tired of the hyperbole. Some of the thought logic used in that thread is useless... "If you have a roll hoop you should use a harness and HANS, if you have a harness and HANS you should have a halo seat and cage, if you have a halo seat and cage you should have a full fire suppression systems... It basically became if you want to do a track day you need a full FIA certified race car.

OK, that was a lot of work...

Got the engine side of the harness tidied up. All unnecessary wires pruned out, and everything labeled. I still have to add the cam position sensor (new connector arriving Saturday) wiring, and figure out the connector(s) for the entire harness... the IAT sensor end will wait until it's in the car and I build an intake.

  • 3 weeks later...
Well I posted in here when I bought my Miata,I guess I'll post about selling it haha. I owned it for about 2.5 years and tracked it a handful of times which is was great for. However being that I drove it mostly to and from work in the summer it got kind of boring quick. That said I'm getting married in a few weeks and hopefully will find a clean spec.b whenever we get back from the honeymoon so I can hang out here again haha.

Most awesome that you were able to make it out there.

Chris, you will just have to tell me your lap times.

I tried to do the math based on the video and it didn't make sense. Then, I saw the tow truck in another segment. I was jumping around just to see the beginning and the end.

I honestly have no idea what my lap times are. I haven't rented a transponder. I'm just going to assume I'm very slow lol.

Just stopwatching the video looks like 2:14 - 2:19 depending on the lap. I have no idea what a good lap in a Miata would be at MRLS.

Finally spent a few hours on mine today... removed some more sound deadening from the inside of the firewall, and pruned more wiring.

Results of today's surgery:

Still working on the passenger side... have one more engine harness to go, plus the fuse box/relays, which I plan on moving into the interior. Then it's time for the dash harness. I really want to get the engine/trans back in the car in the next month or so.

Took it to cars and coffee at a local Porsche dealership. I hadn't had a chance to wash it from Miatas at MRLS or from the trip home with rain showers on the trailer. Some how I was told to park right up front and look what surrounded me...

I keep thinking to myself. Save money, don't mod the Legacy and get myself a Miata.

I bought the black NB2 you see here for $4k. I have wheels, tires and middle to low end coilovers on it for an additional $1700 total. To do similar mods to my old spec.B would have been $4-5k and the coils probably wouldn't be as nicely sorted as the Miata ones.

Even though I own a Miata I'm not a big fan, but it's the most cost effective way to get out on a track.

NBs are probably the best value in Miatae right now, and are great buys for track rats. If I was starting over, I would definitely go with an NB. Too deep down the rabbit hole, though...

Speaking of said rabbit hole... made some good progress over the last few days. I have always intended to move the passenger side fuse/relay box behind the firewall to clean up the engine compartment. The catch is that the box won't fit through the existing holes in the firewall. Over the last few days, I un-pinned and disassembled the fuse box so I could run the wires through the firewall...

This was a major PITA! I don't think these are designed to be disassembled after the initial assembly... It took several hours of drudgery with assorted dental tools to get the job done. A big issue was getting enough light in the little recesses to see what I was doing. It worked though.... I did end up having to cut and re-attach one wire that I couldn't get out.
