SubOperator
As title says, the PS CV boot finally got a crack from DP and throws the grease around. Only 5 days since it started, so I was thinking about getting new boot/grease and rebooting the OEM axle. However, I am at 125K on original CV axles, how much more can I get out of them and does it makes sense to get one of aftermarket ones and replace the whole thing at once? I have never had any issues with OEM Cv axels but remember from my Honda days that replacement CV axels were not that great.... Taking the mileage into account, what do you think? Reboot and see what happens? Or just swap ? robinlsb
reboot:) A clean CV on a subie should last for 200k "Belief does not make truth. Evidence makes truth. And belief does not make evidence."
Zero1
Reboot kits are junk in my experience. OEM half shaft is the best route, aftermarket shaft is the next best route. Wrap that DP and keep some lube on the boots for the future!
SubOperator
You guys are killing me 50/50 split on opinions I was going to buy everything OEM if I decide to go reboot way. and yeah, wrapping that DP is a must now, that's what killed the CV boot in the first place... 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 248K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 258K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K

I figured since you were there not that long ago with GTSPec parts and clutch replacement everything should be easy to take apart. I am looking to get it done this weekend while it is warm... 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 248K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 258K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K

SubOperator
I went with a 100% new axle from Advance Auto parts for $80.00 it's been on the car since Aug 2010. What's the part# you used? I went to AA website using one of links provided in DIY thread and single feedback on the part was that it does not fit 05 Outback. I don't want to get the car on the stands just to find that the part does not fit. 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 248K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 258K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K
SubOperator
Reboot done. Was much easier than I thought of it. Time wise took a ton because I didn;t have correct tool for the boot clamp bands I got from FBP - had to get them from Autozone. Was impressed with lack of wear in the OEM axle with 125 hard miles on it. Autozone also has a new Duralast (or Duragold) axle for ~$100. It is the same part # as remanufactured axle just has N (7666N?) at the end and it needs to be special ordered.
