1998 Legacy GT 2.5L Head Gasket Replacement

Recommended Posts

Update:

I tested coolant for compression gases again using Napa Test kit. See pic for part number.

Price is about $44, but worth it in my opinion.

You dont wanna do head gasket work if its not needed....

Good news, no gases in the coolant.

Test kit stayed blue.

Before doing the head gasket job, I ran the test and it immediately turned yellow, which meant that there were exhaust gases in the coolant.

That gave me the positive test to go ahead with the head gasket work.

I guess this shows at least for now, I have fixed the head gasket leak.

Postscript:

I used Amazon Prime a lot for this job.

Free 2 days shipping, and $3.99 one day shipping.

I ordered a lot of parts, supplies, and tools from them.

Also I was able to return unused and unneeded parts for a refund,

though you do have to pay for the return shipping again, and its more than the original shipping.

The speed of the delivery was great.

For immediate needs I used Napa and O'Reilly, but their prices tended to be higher.

Sometimes though you cant wait even 1 day for a part or tool.

I also bought a lot of tools and test kits from Harbor Freight.

They are cheap in price, but low quality.

So if you only need to use them once or twice it might be worth it.

I also ordered online from 1stsubaruparts.com for OEM parts.

They do give an online discount that is pretty good.

I did that for Subaru OEM Radiator Cap and Thermostat.
