taylormac1993
Just put my heads back on, ready to put the cams and related crap in next week! I seriously couldn't have done it (very well) without you guys so thanks a bunch for that. I have one question for you, as always. When I replaced the water pump, I found a little piece of rubber chilling in the gap marked in this photo. It seemed to be a gasket of some kind, but it's very soft and it was just kind of hanging out, so I pulled it out. Anyone know what it's for? Should I replace it? http://i49.tinypic.com/33zfuzb.jpg Red - Where the gasket-like thingy came out of Blue - Where the water pump bolts up Pink - Idler pulley Thanks again. DOHCEJ22E1
I think it might be the oil pump seal. Not 100% certain on that though. Perhaps a more straight on picture of that may help.
taylormac1993
One of my friends said it was the seal for the oil pump cover (or something along those lines) and that I don't need that cover, let alone the little seal thingy. He's a Honda guy though, so I can't trust him with horizontally opposed stuff like this. lol. All Honda bashing aside, here's the original picture. It's a little bigger and doesn't have the colorful crap. http://i50.tinypic.com/2vj5u8m.jpg
DOHCEJ22E1
That area is the timing belt tensioner plate, now that I've got a good view. I didn't see any gasket material on mine but you can always take the tensioner plate off & check that whole area for gasket material.
monkeyposeur
It's just a rubber seal like the timing cover seals. It's not crucial or anything.
twisty
just a dust seal i think. it was hit or miss on whether i put mine back in, some i did and some i couldnt get to work due to oil impregnation and swelling.
