"Check Engine" light reset

Recommended Posts

Last night I changed the air filter and overlooked reconnecting the MAF sensor plug. Started it this morning and I knew exactly where I screwed up, so I shut it off, reconnected the MAF plug and drove off. 25 miles later and Check Engine is still lit, and Cruise is flashing annoyingly. I removed and reconnected the negative battery terminal and problem solved. But my question is: When you correct such an obvious problem (this or maybe a loose gas filler cap) how long does it take for the ECU to realize the problem is gone and the lights should no longer be lit? I can understand if you didn't correct the problem (such as a bad oxygen sensor) the lights would not go out, but what about the simple easily correctable faults?

I guess I could have waited for three drive cycles....just run a few errands within a day. However, the combination of Check Engine and a flashing cruise made me crazy. I disconnected the battery and had to reprogram my radio stations.
