I Donated broknindarkagain Posted May 30, 2012 I Donated Share Posted May 30, 2012 I'll be lifting my Outback this week or next week. I'm thinking of just throwing 2 inch spacers above the struts. Plastic is MUCH easier to work with, but I'm unsure of how well it will hold up. Thoughts? -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." SpecBamf41
I did this to my old 96 sedan. I used cutting board lope plastic and put 3 half inch spacers on each. And weld on new studs on the right lenght. I had a thread on it but its from before this username. Stasis
Would plastic not be too fragile squished between steel and more steel if quite thick?
SpecBamf41
worked great on my car. and i used 6, quarter inch pieces on each. and she worked fine. almost seems to stiffen the car some. BNR18g on 93oct

overspool
I use UHMW for all kinds of things. It'll hold up just fine.

Off Road SHO
John or Swaganwagon, do you have a pattern or even dimensions for these spacers? I have a lathe and drill press. Tom
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted June 4, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted June 4, 2012 Yes, here they are. I might swing by sometime over the next week Tom. I'm sure if the two of us sit down and give it a little thought it can easily be done. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/broknindarkagain/c91b2aca.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/broknindarkagain/ccf9aa3d.jpg End result will be something similar to this. I don't know how comfortable I am using plastic since I do get pretty serious on the trails. I would just feel safer with metal. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/broknindarkagain/d84a281d.jpg -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Stasis
well on trail you could take spares if you are getting some made?
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted June 4, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted June 4, 2012 I would rather just not worry about them breaking. If your suspension fails while you're on flat level ground, thats just fine. Its easy to jack it up and do repairs. But if something goes wrong while you're crawling through a bunch of big rocks, or you're 2 feet deep in water, or you're on an unlevel road....it makes repairs dangerous if not impossible to do where you're at. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Off Road SHO
The Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) plastic is more than strong enough for this application. It's not cheap however. Sometimes you can find old food prep tables in the junk yard that have 1" or 1.25" thick tops made of this material. I have hole saws that will do the inside circles and the mill can do the rest.
