Oil on alternator and alternator cover?

Recommended Posts

So today my power steering went out completely and the alternator light came on in my car luckily I was close to home. Turns out the bolt sheared off that connects to the guide for the alternator. That is another story though. When I took off my alternator cover I noticed that oil had sprayed on the alternator and alternator cover but I couldn't see where it was coming from. Where could the oil possibly be coming from?

Was it red oil or motor oil ?

Red would be power steering

Motor oil would be the oil line off the banjo bolt on the front of the passenger side head.

That would be a good one. There is an oil temp sensor in a galley right there too. Crank angle sensor is under the alt.

Lol. Good one.

Actually the build up does not look that bad. But cold be a slight leak off the valve cover vents (back to the inlet tube). Something like that. Could be some slight spillage from a previous oil change. Power steering fitting looks dry. We see those leak at the o-ring after time.

If it was major, you would have a pool of oil. Which I have seen more than a few times. A slight dusting like that is something I would just look for at the next oil change. Look at the PCV and the valve breathers coming back to the inlet tube. Check around the plastic 90deg end of the power steering line. If it is mostly around or on the inlet tube, change the PCV for good measure.
