Ol Rusty 97gt

Recommended Posts

Looking good man! It's coming along.

I want that 2.5... I'll trade it for a nice 2.2. haha.

It's so hard to find a good 2.5 block these days, they've all been cooked. And the good ones are way too expensive. I think it's time to start rebuild mine...

also, I really like the chrome ring around the rims. I'll have to try that on mine.

Did your overheating problem go away yet? Whenever I drain my radiator I have to burp it a million times to get it to go away. Sometimes sitting overnight helps.

You are lucky to find two black GTs. I turned my L into a GT (body only). It took a lot of roaming the bone yards to find the hood and rear hatch. :) I still have the '95 22E but I love that engine. It is bulletproof and the 5MT makes it a lot of fun.

987687- I wish I had a 2.2:p and I have 3 2.5s funny how that works. Thanks, I dont mind them for the mean time but imo not a big fan of the rims themselves

monkeyposeur- I think it did, after I installed the new elbow, thermostat and swapped the 99 rad over I drove it for a about an hour and it overheated. I may have been pushing the car a little to hard so I think thats why, but seemed fine today when I was driving. I thought it was pretty lucky for only 350 cant complain with that!

I have a gas leak somewhere, there is never a puddle underneath my car it just smells like gas inside the car any ideas?

Any suggestions on next upgrade other than lower springs?

Smells like gas inside the car? Odd.

The usual fuel leak is the fuel filler neck. It rusts out where the plastic shield thing goes over it. It's inside the back pass wheel well.

It's really not that hard to replace.

You don't have to drop the tank. All you have to take off is the wheel. The filler just unbolts and comes out. I mean, the bolts and stuff are all stuck. So it sucks, but that's the idea. No tank dropping.

Dropping the tank on these cars SUCKS.

You have to drop the crossmember, rear end, and all the suspension. Pray you never have to drop a tank.

I just had to clean out my fenders, it was like a 20 year ecosystem in both the front fenders. lucky for me their was no rust starting in the fenders. any one know of any other place this happens on these cars??

Thats not bad at all, and I am really hoping I dont have to drop the tank...So I am completly stuck atm, I have a brand new rad cap, elbow and thermostat in and I also took it to a shop where they took the air lock out of my rad. Still seems to over heat, any ideas?? I have not let the gauge go over 80%. Also it doesnt seem to over heat when idling

I really super doubt you have to drop the tank. You don't need to in order to replace the filler neck. I worked in a garage in Maine. I've replaced god knows how many of them.

Does your heat work in the car?

When the car is warmed up, if you open the overflow cap, do bubbles come out?

Sounds like a head gasket to me :/

Bring it to me and I'll trade you for a nice 2.2...

I just got my car tested for head gasket failure and the shop said my engine is fine. Heat works great same with the ac, il probably swap the the filler neck from the 99 over today and see if that solves my problem. I imagine I will be going down bolt snap lane ahah

Taillights blacked out but left reverse lights clear, they need to go a bit darker but good for now. Just have to buy a new wiper for the back the rusty one is a real eye sorer

Swapped the 99gt cluster over to the 97, I like this one more :)

I like the blacked out lights! I'd just spray paint the wiper.

Also, with the grill. I just painted the chrome black.

That gauge cluster is funny. On the US models it says BRAKE when the parking brake is on, not that icon.

Also, looking at that again. There's something funky going on there. In 99 the gauges switched over to the style like the tach, temp, and fuel. It has lots of little tick marks. The speedo in your pic doesn't match the rest of the cluster. That's the 97/98 style with only a small dash on the 5 place.

It looks like someone has tampered with that and swapped in the speedo head from a different year/car.

The usual reason is to make it lower mileage, but that's a lot of km's on the ticker. Wonder if it stopped working or something.

Could be I am the second owner, and the ticker did stock working before I got the car I just like the fact the heat and gas, temp and rpm have more ticks.

Now that I think about it, maybe 98 also has the kind with all the ticks. I seem to remember someone saying I don't have the stock cluster to my car's year with this one:

I'm fairly certain I pulled that out of a 97 so I could mod it.

987687-Are those custom backlights on your cluster?

Twisty- Thats to bad it would be quite unreasonable for shipping id imagine for the whole kit.

Yea, I took it apart, cut all the walls out. Then carefully glued in strip LEDs for perfect light distribution.
