sleakwrx
I wanted to post a log in here for the experts with VF46 to look at. My current setup is: VF46 FMS TMIC FMS CBE Perrin HFC DP AEM CAI Cobb AP with Stg 2 tune from Torqued Performance. I'm not doubting this tuner his name is all over the WRX 3G forums, but he is used to tuning the TD04 or VF52 so I'm not quite sure he knows exactly how the VF46 should look. I am going to post my 3rd gear pull WOT ~2k-6.5k RPM. Let me know what ya'll think and if you think I can get more out of a tune maybe from Infamous or someone else here. I have the map he sent me not linked so I could send that to someone to look at as well. Please let me know. P.S. I know its weird to see a WRX with a VF46 but I got a sweet deal on it from BMX and figured it would bridge the gap until I get my TD06-20g and supporting mods. Thanks again.datalog4.csv
ClimberDHexMods
I'm not an expert, but I can read a log, and everything looks fine. I don't know how much more you would really want to push it, since timing isn't crazy and boost is reasonable. Can't see your AFR or how the wastegate is tuned, but it appears to be fine, in my non expert opinion. Edit: Note I like to keep things conservative, but if you want to push it then there may be room to sneak in some more timing here and there. Not sure what you're after. bmx045
log looks clean and healthy. boost is where it should be for a vf46.. and no knock
sleakwrx
Ok cool thx I'm looking to get a wide band afr but that will come with stage 3. My wgdc is set at about 75 if I remember the map setup correctly. Could be wrong but anyways I just didn't know if there was anymore safe room to go. I'm sure I could turn boost way up like my buddy who has killed 2 turbos and try to hit 21-22 psi but that's just stupid IMO Thanks for looking Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
bmx045
nope, 18-19 is about it with the 46.... doesn't seem to pull much more air after that
sleakwrx
when i installed it and did the break in and found out i had a cracked vac line between the compressor and the T going back to the other side it will def hit above 18-19. I was hitting fuel cut on my tune that was set for 22....lol The car felt really strong at that point and really threw me back in my seat. Of course its probably not safe to go up that high, but I wish I could. I made rustang GT look silly when he tried to pass me at a 2 lane into 1 lane right after a light when I was at a dead stop and he was rolling about 20 mph before the light changed. I'd give anything to have that "power" back, but I'm sure its not safe for the turbo or my car so I'll keep it where its at. But I would run 21-22 if I could I'll just have to wait until I get my 20g and such...here's to hoping I win the 500 mil tonight in the lottery... bmx045
not sure why you thought a breakin was necessary on a turbo with 50k on it.... of course it'll hit above 18-19, it just is very minimal power gain, and is past the turbo's efficiency range therefore becoming too hot and pumping out more hot air thus shortening the life of it
LGT For ME
I've used Eric to tune my car stg2 91 then stg2e, and now this weekend on v52 e85 and can say he does know his stuff. He's probably one of the more experienced road tuners in Colorado, but like you said he is much more into the WRX crowd as he drives a WRX but has a done a few LGT's. If you want a LGT specialist check w/ Dave of Cryo Performance, Dave is super cool and awsome to deal with and he also tuned his own spec b so he knows the leggy's front and back. I'm also on the side of tuning toward the safe side, dont want to and cant afford a BOOOOOM
bmx045
a wrx is nearly identical to lgt engine and ecu wise....
sleakwrx
I "broke" it in with some advice from a forum member here. Not to do the actual definition but to let everything settle and make sure it was all together right. Do the retorques and such. Anyways not to confuse people but I do have a wrx and like Erics tune just wanted to make sure it was looking right for a vf46 since Eric doesn't tune a lot of vf46 from what I understood Anyways thanks again all. fahr_side
I'd switch to a better intercooler and then push further with timing. You will benefit now from a better IC but it will be essential if you go to a bigger turbo. +1 for Eric... very talented tuner and generous to a fault with his time and know-how. Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs. rtbrjason
Nice log. Very smooth timing and boost. Looks almost identical to my wot logs on an 08 spec b. (same turbo).

So by better intercooler you mean a FMIC? just curious cause I know FMS isn't known for their quality but it seems like it does a good job to me but of course I'm no expert. Eventually I plan to go to a TD06-20g from Kinugawa cause well I'm on a budget cause of my family and I've read pretty good reviews and very few bad reviews on them. I wanted to keep the TMIC for the time being even after the swap until I can get a nice quality FMIC.
fahr_side
So by better intercooler you mean a FMIC? just curious cause I know FMS isn't known for their quality but it seems like it does a good job to me but of course I'm no expert. By better intercooler I mean a well-made one, either TMIC or FMIC. There is evidence the FMS one is poorly built and doesn't do the job. With a VF-46 you aren't pushing it much but you can be sure a 20G will be well beyond its limits. There are good FMIC kits out there for much less money than a good TMIC. Note that a FMIC may give you the option of using an STi-type turbo with horizontal outlet, which opens up more choices. The only TMICs I'd even consider now are the PW (which your FMS item is a copy of) and the Spearco item in process now (GB over at 3GWRX). For this kind of money you'll get a very good FMIC kit. Since it sounds like you're facing some budget restraints I'll just remind you there are several other supporting mods you'll need to reach the full potential of the 20G.
