gear grind (renewed)

Recommended Posts

I know several people have complained of grinding when going into 2nd-4th, but I never saw any update from you guys about what the dealerships have done. I just started having this problem, and I'm not too concerned because I use a fairly light touch when shifting, so I don't think I'm damaging anything. I know I'm pushing the clutch past the clutch point ... hell it's on the freaking floorboard sometimes. Still, when I hear the grind noise, I instinctively go back to neutral ... which means I look like an idiot who can't shift correctly.

I was hoping you guys have more information on what the dealerships will do. If they just say it's normal, I'm not going to take a day off work to get that explanation. If they write it up and tell me the transmission or clutch needs adjustment, then I'll be happy with taking a day off to get that done.

Got a new clutch. Made it better, but transmission was still rough. Change my transmission fluid to MTL-R. BTW my old fluid look had a lot of brass particles in it. I'm sure it was rough after changing the clutch because of how much it had worn the synchro's previously.

2nd to 3rd on mine is the most likely to grind if I don't have the clutch ALL THE WAY to the floor. Up even less than an inch and I'll grind it.

(Note to any observers - I don't do this on a regular basis, I learned quickly, but I'll admit to doing it. :()

I made a change to Castrol Synthetic in the tranny box after I was having a bit of gear whine, and that got rid of the gear whine, plus cleaned up any grinding quite a bit. One thing you may want to get a dealer to check (from experience, unfortunately) is the gear shift selector lever and the bushing. If the lever gets bent (easy to do) or if the car manages to jump out of gear once or twice, what it can do along with the bent selector shaft is crack/break the top of the bushing collar. This is very hard to see at a dealer as it is in the one place that is almost impossible to see. Rare, but possible.

Cheers,
