What exactly does "certified pre-owned" cover in Subaru language?

I've seen their 152-point inspection sheet they market for CPO vehicles, but a lot of it just says "check pads" or "check filter" etc. My question is, how much should one expect them to have replaced things in the vehicle that needed replacement? I got my 2009 Legacy 2.5i from a dealer CPO and when I checked the air filter after about 500 miles, it was in need of replacing. I was also told by the dealer that I had ~60% of my tread depth left on the OE Advans, which after about 1500 miles were at 6/32" (aka about 60% of the treadlife was gone). Today I popped one of the rims off to wash and the brake pads have about 1/10th of an inch of material on them (after 2k miles), so i'm not even gonna drive it til i get my new pads in Friday.

 

My question is simple: were these things supposed to have been been replaced and if so, does it sound like they should have been given the lifespan of them after I got them? Or is CPO basically them just saying "we think it looks good enough to give a warranty to you, you're on your own for consumables."

What I've found with my last few dealer purchased used vehicles was; If it ain't broke, or a very obvious visual flaw, they didn't even look at it. They wash and clean them, make sure the paperwork is clear and out they go.

 

A used 2008 Hyundai I purchased in 2009 was missing a spring clip on the air cleaner housing, still had a dirty air filter and had an old aftermarket oil filter on it, even though the engine oil looked clean.

 

The worst was a 2005 Trailblazer I bought in 2006. I noticed lots of sand on the under-body a few days after I got it home. The engine compartment was like new aside from some sand in the nooks and crannies. I pulled the air filter element only to find it literally PACKED with sand !@##$ WTF!?!

 

Regardless, these vehicles were very good deals when I bought them and they served me well the 2-3yrs I typically keep my vehicles.

 

"Certified Used" is meaningless unless it comes with some super bumper/bumper or even a good powertrain warranty.

That's pretty much what I figured. I'm not bothered replacing a few things, just made me wonder if they'd really even inspected it or not and if I should be worried about the overall condition of the vehicle, which otherwise seems to be in great shape. In the end I got the CPO with added security + powertrain warranties for the next 3 years for the blue book value of a private sale.

Nice!

 

Plus you have to figure for your typical big dealership, especially the multi-brand chain places, it's a ton of risk for them to sell you a disaster of a lemon. They've got too much to loose.

Please contact SOA and ask for the CPO department. The. Air filter should NOT look like that after500 miles on a CPO car. SOA needs to know these things.

Normally they last 30-45k miles.

Again, on a CPO car they should not be sot in 500 miles.

 

Normally they last 30-45k miles.

Well the pads were pulled at 2k miles. But given the low end estimate of 30k miles, that's only about 7% of the usable life left when they inspected it.

At this time, there are no warranty-related claims submitted for brake pad replacements and I am unable to provide you with information related to the replacement of the cabin air filter in this vehicle."

 

I was pretty clear in my initial email I was referring to the engine air filter and that I was not implying any of these should be covered under warranty. So I emailed them again trying to clear up the misconception that I'm not trying to claim a warranty-covered replacement but rather that the condition of these parts indicates they should have been replaced during the inspection process.

Mike, just curious about something here. I assume the dealership is on the hook for the cost of reconditioning the vehicle for the certification process, like the cost of pads, filters, etc but that SoA (the national company) is on the hook for warranty-covered costs done after the car is bought?

I am not 100% sure how the certification process works. I would think you are correct although, perhaps the dealership may have to pay SOA to get it certified as well.

It's a good idea to at least get a correspondence going with SOA in regards to your dealer experience, but having been down this road before w/ other manufacturers, they'll claim it's out of their hands.

 

They'll say they have little/no control over their independent dealerships and in reality, that's true.
