roundthirteen
Is there any real reason why some places say not to use Red Line 75w90 gear oil in a 6mt? I have Extra-S to go in now but I was wondering why some say not to use Red Line in the 6mt. Also what about Red Line shock proof in the rear diff? My car's not a sleeper it's a hibernator. http://pure-tuning.com
NSFW
Shockproof oil has additives that don't play nice with the oil pump in the early 6MTs. Subaru stopped including the pump at some point (I'm not sure which year) and the shockproof stuff is OK in those 6MTs.

mass-hole
Im wondering the same thing. I see lots of threads on the 5 spds but not the 6 spds. Wanted to do this at the same time as my STS install.

Depends on the 6MT. The 07 spec b had an oil pump, and I don't usually recommend shockproof in those. At most a 3:1 ratio of Motul:Shockproof. For 08-09, where the oil pump got deleted the 1:3 ratio you mentioned is fine. The new split-case 6MT is basically a 5MT. BAC5.2
Oh, the rear diff. Just use a synthetic 75W90. Extra-S is fine, I prefer Motul fluids. No reason to use Shockproof. roundthirteen
I was looking at flatiorons site and they said they don't suggest redline in the 6mt diff. I have extra S from the Bean. BAC5.2
I was looking at flatiorons site and they said they don't suggest redline in the 6mt diff. I have extra S from the Bean. They also have "Synchroshift" listed for Subaru use, so it sounds like they don't know what they are talking about. Anyone who suggests using Synchroshift in a Subaru is an idiot and should not be trusted. Max Capacity
FWIW my 09 Spec B has Amsoil Sever Gear 75w-90 in the tranny and rear diff. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. BAC5.2
That's probably fine stuff. I've heard good things about Amsoil, but never tried it. Your 09 doesn't have the oil pump, so you are free to use the shockproof many moons from now if it starts grinding a little. AZP Installs
We've run Amsoil and Extra S in the 6spds with the pumps and the Amsoil has been fine. I heard the reason that the shockproof isnt good is that the pump foams up the oil which is bad. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us.
